The 2016 Summer Olympics ran from Friday 5 August to Sunday 21 August, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is a chronological summary of the major events that took place during the course of the Games.

  • Boxer Hassan Saada (Morocco) was arrested over allegations of sexual assault. He was detained for 15 days, pending an investigation, which will prevent him from competing in any boxing events.[3]

  • Men's 56 kg: China's Long Qingquan won the Gold, setting an Olympic record of lifting 170 kg in the Clean&Jerk, and a world record of a total score of 307 kg. Om Yun-chol (North Korea) finished with a total score of 303 kg to win the silver, and the bronze went to Sinphet Kruaithong (Thailand) after recording a total score of 289 kg.
  • Women's 53 kg: China's Li Yajun set a new Olympic record in Snatch after lifting 101 Kg but she was unable to lift her three Clean&Jerk attempts. The gold instead went to Hsu Shu-ching (Chinese Taipei), who finished with a score of 212 kg. The silver went to Hidilyn Diaz (Philippines) with a score of 200 kg, and Yoon Jin-hee (South Korea) finished with a score of 199 kg to win the bronze.

  • Men's 69 kg: Shi Zhiyong of China finished with a total score of 352 kg to win the gold, beating Turkey's Daniyar Ismayilov's total final score of 351 kg. Kyrgyzstan's Izzat Artykov was initially awarded the bronze with a final score of 339 kg, but was later disqualified after he tested positive for strychnine.[48] On 18 August, the bronze was then the awarded to Colombia's Luis Javier Mosquera, who finished after Artykov at 338 kg.
  • Women's 63 kg: China's Deng Wei set a world record of 147 kg in the Clean & Jerk, and another world record for a total score of 262 kg, to win the gold. Choe Hyo-sim (North Korea) finished in second at 248 kg, and Karina Goricheva (Kazakhstan) finished with the bronze with a total score of 243 kg.

  • Men's 77 kg: Nijat Rahimov (Kazakhstan) set a world record of 214 kg in the Clean & Jerk, and finished with 379 kg overall, to win the gold. Lü Xiaojun (China) set a world record of 177 in the Snatch and also finished with a total score of 379 kg, but lost the tiebreaker based on body weight and thus was awarded the silver.[68] Mohamed Mahmoud of Egypt won the bronze with a final score of 361.
  • Women's 69 kg: Xiang Yanmei (China) finished with the gold with a final score of 261 kg, Zhazira Zhapparkul (Kazakhstan) finished at 259 kg to win the silver, and Sara Ahmed (Egypt) won the bronze with a final score of 255 kg.

Nick Skelton (Great Britain) then won the gold with a time of 42.82, and Peder Fredricson (Sweden) won the silver with a time of 43.35. Eric Lamaze (Canada) finished with a time of 42.09 in the jump-off, but four penalties dropped him to the bronze.
