Salanpur (community development block) (Bengali: সালানপুর সমষ্টি উন্নয়ন ব্লক) is an administrative division in Asansol subdivision of Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Chittaranjan and Salanpur police stations serve this block. Headquarters of this block is at Rupnarayanpur Bazar. Chittaranjan, Rupnarainpur and Jemari are urban areas in this block.[1][2] It is a suburb of Asansol.

Geography

Rupnarainpur is located at 23°49′05″N 86°53′20″E / 23.818°N 86.889°E / 23.818; 86.889.

Salanpur community development block has an area of 109.86  km2.[2]

Asansol is composed of undulating laterite soil. This area lies between two rivers – the Damodar and the Ajay. They flow almost parallel to each other in the region – the average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared.[3]The Barakar River and Maithon Reservoir forms the western boundary of this block.

Nunia, a small stream about 40 km long has its origin near Adra village in the Salanpur area, flows through the Barabani area, past Asansol and joins the Damodar in the Raniganj area. [4]

Gram panchayats

Gram panchayats of Salanpur block/panchayat samiti are: Achhra, Alladi, Basudevpur-Jemari, Dendua, Ethora, Fulberia-Bolkunda, Jitpur-Uttarrampur, Kallya, Rupnarayanpur, Salanpur and Samdi.[5]

Demographics

As per 2001 census, Salanpur block had a total population of 156,338, out of which 82,741 were males and 73,597 were females. Salanpur block registered a population growth of 9.64 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for Bardhaman district was 14.36 per cent.[2]Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[6]

Scheduled castes at 35,898 formed around one-fifth the population. Scheduled tribes numbered 17,143.[7]

Economy

Salanpur is a coal mining area. [8] One of the area headquarters of Eastern Coalfields Ltd., a subsidiary of Coal India Limited is located here.[9]

With extensive underground mining for many years, this area has been facing the problem of land subsidence. About 361 villages under the Raniganj and Salanpur coalfield areas are the victims of subsidence.[10]

Steel plant

The West Bengal Government signed in May 2007 an agreement with Bhushan Steel to set up a 2 million tonnes integrated steel plant and a 1000 MW captive thermal power plant at Salanpur. 2,500 acres (10 km2) of land will be required for the purpose. The plant was expected to be operational in 2012.[11]

Transport

Minibuses operating on the Asansol - Chittaranjan route operate via Salanpur.[12]It is about 15 km from Asansol and 10 km from Chittaranjan.

Salanpur rail station is 225 km from Howrah Station on the Howrah-Delhi main line.[13]

Literacy

As per 2001 census, Salanpur block had a total literacy of 78.22 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 87.07 per cent female literacy was 68.20 per cent. Bardhaman district had a total literacy of 70.18 per cent, male literacy being 78.63 per cent and female literacy being 60.95 per cent.[14]
