Barangay elections will be held in October 31, 2016. The election shall elect the Punong Barangay, more commonly known as barangay captains, and members of the Sangguniang Barangay, or barangay council, in 42,028 barangays throughout the Philippines whose terms start in November 2016. Barangays are the smallest local government unit in the Philippines.
Elections for the reformed Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) will also be held at the same time.[1]
These elections will conclude the 2016 election cycle that start in May with the election of the Philippine president, the members of the Philippine Congress and provincial, city and municipal officials. Upon their election, barangay captains shall elect their cities' or municipalities' League of Barangays of the Philippines chairman, also known as the Association of Barangay Captains or ABC Chairman, who will also sit on their respective local municipal or city council. The provincial ABC chairman will also sit on the provincial board.
