Wilton is a suburb of Cork City, and part of the townland of Togher. It is notable for being the site of Cork University Hospital,[1] Cork's largest hospital. Other notable landmarks are Wilton Shopping Centre and St. Finbarr's Cemetery, which lies on the border between Wilton and Glasheen and is the resting place of many of Cork's most notable citizens.
In July 2016 some residents got very upset when they realized they were living in Togher. The situation was made all the more ludicrous by the fact that people thought this would effect property values in what is a very settled area.
The situation escalated, into what some residents of the surrounding area described as a 'mass hysteria' comparable to the Dancing Plague of 1518, which according to local folklore, is believed to have originated in the Wilton area of Togher. In one such an example, the owner of a BMW was compelled to vandalism and theft, reportedly due to the rapidly falling value of his property. It is believed the devaluation was in excess of that of the Post-2008 Irish economic downturn, during which he sat on his arse.
