Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo (Hangul: 역도요정 김복주; RR: Yeokdo-yojeong Gim Bok-ju) is a South Korean television series starring Lee Sung-kyung in the title role. It is a coming-of-age sports drama, inspired by the life of Olympic gold-medalist Jang Mi-ran.[1] It airs on MBC every Wednesdays and Thursdays at 22:00 (KST) starting November 16, 2016.

Synopsis

This drama is inspired by the life of South Korean Olympic weightlifter gold-medalist Jang Mi Ran and it’s about college athletes who fighting for their dreams and finding love. Kim Bok-joo (Lee Sung-kyung) is a student in Hanwool College of Physical Education. She has shown strength like no other since she was a child as influenced by her former weightlifter father. She looks thoughtless at a first glance, but inside she's as fragile as glass and has deep recognition. Jung Joon-hyung (Nam Joo-hyuk) is Kim Bok-joo's childhood friend. He is a born swimmer but ever since he was disqualified from his first international event, he suffers from 'start trauma'. Along with Kim Bok-joo, he overcomes his troubles and finds his dream and love. Song Shi-ho (Kyung Soo-jin) is a rhythm gymnast who also attends Hanwool College of Physical Education. She started gymnastics since she was 5 and won the Asian Games at the age of 18. She's always been the best since then but mental pressure caused her to break up with Jung Joon-hyung and regret it.

Main characters

A naturally gifted weightlifter with an ambitious personality. She stands up for injustice, but is shy and awkward around boys. She hides her insecurities and fragile heart under her strong exterior.[2][3]
Bok-joo's best friend, a talented swimmer with a playful personality. He suffers a trauma that began when he made a false start at his first big international competition and got disqualified.[4]
Joon-hyung's brother. A former athlete who becomes an obesity doctor due to an injury. His gentle and kind personality makes him the first man that Bok-joo falls in love with.
A top-class rhythmic gymnast, who won a silver medal at the Asian Games at the age of eighteen. She is an overachiever, and is under constant stress about her developing figure, which causes her to break up with Joon-hyung.

The series is written by Yang Hee-seung of the 2015 hit romance-comedy Oh My Ghostess and High School King of Savvy; and directed by PD Oh Hyun-joong of 7th Grade Civil Servant.

First script reading took place on August, 2016 at MBC broadcasting station in Sangam, Seoul, South Korea.[9]

This drama reunites YG label-mates Lee Sung-kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk who previously starred in Cheese in the Trap.[10]
