Timeline of the war in Donbass (April–June 2016)

This is a timeline of the War in Donbass, from 1 April 2016. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops^[1] in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

April

1 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 77 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 31 March.^{[2][3][4][5][6][7]} Separatists authorities recorded 63 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used heavy machine guns, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm self-propelled guns and 152 mm howitzers. The main targets were pro-Russian positions around Horlivka, Zaitseve, Holmivsky, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Zhabicheve, Sakhanka, Vesele, Kominternove, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district in Donetsk city.^[8]

The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action and eight others wounded in the Donbass region during the last day of March.^[9][10] According to Lysenko the net weight of explosives – delivered by more than 100 artillery rounds and more than 370 mortar shells on 31 March – exceeded 6.5 tons.^[9]

Ukrainian authorities denounced that pro-Russian forces opened fire on 36 occasions on Ukrainian positions throughout the day.^[11][12]

The White House announced that it will provide Ukraine with $335 million more in "security assistance" after a meeting between Vice President of the United States Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that took place in Washington on March 31.^[13]

2 April

In the morning it was reported by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 65 occasions on Ukrainian troops over the past 24 hours. On 12 occasions the fire was returned.^[14][15][16] Four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded as a consequence of the attacks.^[17][18]

Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 6 attacks on Ukrainian troops throughout the day. The rebels fired mortar barrages at Ukrainian positions in Avdiivka and Pisky. Small arms and sniper fire was reported at Opytne and Butivka mining complex, west of Donetsk city, and at Novozvanivka, Luhansk Oblast.^[19]

3 April

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 25 occasions on 2 March, including on 7 occasions from weapons banned by the Minsk agreements.^{[20][21][22][23]} The fire was returned on four occasions.^[24] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region during on 2 April.^[25][26]

By evening, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 6 occasions. Most incidents occurred in the region of Mariupol, where the rebels shelled Shyrokyne with 120 mm mortars. Ukrainian troops at Hranitne and Novotroitske received automatic fire, while small arms and heavy machine guns were fired at Ukrainian redoubts at Maiorsk, west of Horlivka.^[27][28]

4 April

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that their positions were fired at by pro-Russian forces on 23 occasions on 3 March, including on 16 occasions in Donetsk direction, on 5 occasions in Mariupol direction, and on 2 occasions in Luhansk Oblast. The Ukrainian army fired back on four occasions.^[29][30][31] Three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action on Sunday, 3 April.^[32] Separatist authorities reported 25 attacks on their forces over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian army used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian troops targeted Yasinuvata, Spartak, Kominternove, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[33]

The number of attacks on Ukrainian positions had increased to 26, if compared to the previous day, the spokesman ot the Ukrainian military headquarters reported in the evening. Pro-Russian forces fired small arms, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars at the Ukrainian strongholds of Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city, Novhorodske, west of Horlivka, and Novozvanivka, in the northern section of the demarcation line. The rebels also shelled Ukrainian redoubts with heavy weaponry all along the front. The main targets were Opytne and Krasnohorivka, around Donetsk city; Shyrokyne and Novotroitske, in the region north of Mariupol; Zaitseve, north of Horlivka, and Stanytsia Luhanska, the Ukrainian headquarters in the northern front. The Ukrainian army returned fire three times in the course of the day.^[34] Pro-Russian authorities said that Ukrainian tanks shelled the rebel-held village of Trudovske, in the outskirts of Donetsk.^[35]

5 April

Ukrainian officials recorded 61 attacks on their troops over the past 24 hours.^{[36][37][38][39]} Two Ukrainian soldiers were killed in action and another 10 wounded during the same period.^[40] Separatists sources reported 49 Ukrainian attacks on pro-Russian positions using small arms, rocket propelled grenades, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. The Ukrainian army pounded rebel redoubts at Sakhanka, Horlivka, Staromyhailivka, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Kominternove, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[41]

By evening, Ukrainian positions had been fired at on 40 occasions by the rebels. Avdiivka was once again the main target of pro-Russian forces. Heavy shelling on the Ukrainian stronghold was reported in the morning from 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, along with small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire and rocket launchers. Nearby Opytne and Maryinka were also the target of heavy weapons. North of Horlivka, Ukrainian troops at Zaitseve and Luhanske also received intense enemy fire. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar rounds landed at Lebedynske, while small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers were fired at Ukrainian redoubts in Novotroitske and Vodyane. The Ukrainian military returned fire on seven opportunities from Avdiivka and Lebedynske.^[42]

6 April

The Ukrainian military reported that separatists forces opened fire on 76 occasions on their positions over the past 24 hours, 23 of them using weaponry banned by the Minsk agreements.^[43] Four Ukrainian soldiers were wounded in action.^[44][45] Pro-Russian authorities recorded 34 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. Ukrainian forces used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. Most incidents took place at Zaitseve, Sakhanka, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Staromyhailivka, Kominternove and Donetsk airport.^[46]

By evening, pro-Russian troops had broken the ceasefire 15 times. The industrial area of Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city, was struck six times by mortar and artillery barrages. Mortar rounds also landed in Nevelske and Krasnohorivka. The militias harassed Ukrainian troops at Opytne and Butivka mining complex with small arms fire. Sniper activity was reported at Maryinka. Shyrokyne, east of Mariupol, was the target of mortar fire, and Ukrainian positions at Luhanske, north of Horlivka, received small arms fire.^[47]

A Ukrainian soldier died from numerous wounds in Kharkiv military hospital.^[48]

7 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 67 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 6 April. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske, in the region north of Horlivka, where the rebels also shelled Novhorodske and Zaitseve with mortars and harassed Ukrainian troops with small arms and sniper fire. Around Donetsk city, mortars of different caliber landed in Avdiivka, Opytne, Nevelske and Butivka mining complex. Maryinka was the target of small arms, rocket launchers and antiaircraft cannons. In the region around Mariupol, mortar volleys were fired at Shyrokyne and Krasnohorivka. Pro-Russian forces fired automatic grenade launchers and antiaircraft cannons at Ukrainian positions near Novozvanivka, in the northern front. The Ukrainian army returned fire on 10 occasions.^[49][50] The Ukrainian military reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman had been wounded in action in Avdiivka on 6 April.^[51][52] Separatists authorities recorded 42 violations of the truce by Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian military used small arms, rocket propelled grenades, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Vesele, Vasiliivka, Spartak, Kominternove, Bezimenne, Leninske, Volvo center, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[53]

The separatists opened fire on 23 occasions throughout the day. The main target of the rebels was once again Avdiivka, where nine attacks on Ukrainian defences took place. In the same area, the Ukrainian garrisons at Opytne and Butivka mining complex received small arms and heavy machine gun fire. Mortar rounds landed in Nevelske. Ukrainian outposts at Vodyane, north of Mariupol, were fired at from automatic weapons, while Luhanske, north of Horlivka, was the target of mortar fire. In the northern front, pro-Russian forces opened fire with small arms and rocket launchers on Ukrainian redoubts at Trokhizbenka and Stanytsia Luhanska. Ukrainian troops returned fire three times.^[54]

8 April

Ukrainian officials recorded 70 attacks on their troops over the past 24 hours.^[55][56][57] One Ukrainian soldier was killed in action and another 12 wounded during the same period.^[58] Ukrainian forces shot down a Russian-made Orlan-10 drone over Avdiivka.^[59] Pro-Russian authorities denounced 82 Ukrainian attacks on rebel positions over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian army used small arms, grenade launchers 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm guns and 152 mm howitzers. Ukrainian tanks shelled Horlivka, Shyroka Balka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. Holmivsky and Spartak received heavy artillery fire. Hrihorivka, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Vesele and Zaitseve were struck by mortar barrages.^[60]

By evening, Ukrainian positions had been fired at on 29 occasions by the rebels, including 13 occasions near Avdiivka, which was the target of incendiary rounds on six instances. Other attacks were carried out by rebel infantry and snipers. Elsewhere around Donetsk city, Pisky was the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. In the region between Horlivka and Svetlodarsk, the separatists targeted Ukrainian outposts at Maiorsk, Novhorodske and Zaitseve with the same kind of weapons. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske. In the region of Mariupol, the rebels opened up with heavy weapons on Vodyane, Shyrokyne, Novotroitske and Maryinka. Self-propelled artillery shelled the Ukrainian stronghold of Pavlopil.^[61][62][63]

9 April

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 73 occasions on 8 March, including on 25 occasions in the areas surrounding Avdiivka. The fire was returned on 18 occasions.^{[64][65][66][67]} Five Ukrainian soldiers were wounded in action over the past 24 hours, including four of them in the region of Avdiivka, and the fifth in the region of Donetsk airfield. An elderly female civilian was killed in Avdiivka after midnight.^[68][69] Separatist sources recorded 54 Ukrainain violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, and self-propelled 152 mm artillery. The main targets were Zaitseve, Zhavichebe, Yakovlivka, Sakhanka, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Oktyabr, Yasinuvata, Vesele, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district. One rebel soldier was killed in action and two civilians wounded.^[70] Heavy fighting was also reported at Avdiivka.^[71]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 35 attacks on Ukrainian troops throughout the day. Most incidents took place around Donetsk city, specially at Avdiivka. Rebel troops fired small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades at Ukrainian redoubts in Verkhnyotoretske, Nevelske and Opytne. Small arms fire was reported at Pisky. In the outskirts of Horlivka, pro-Russian forces attacked Ukrainian entrenchments with small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers near Maiorsk and Novoselivka. The Ukrainian garrison at Luhanske was harassed with automatic fire. Mortar volleys landed six times in Shyrokyne. Once again, Ukrainian forces fired back.^[72][73][74]

Amnesty International has said it has evidence pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine summarily killed four Ukrainian soldiers in their captivity.^[75]

10 April

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 91 occasions on 9 March. West of Donetsk, Avdiivka was shelled from three different locations -Yakolivka, Mineralne and Yasinuvata- with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Pro-Russian tanks fired 125 mm rounds on Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske, north of Horlivka.^[76][77][78] Six Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action over the past 24 hours, including four of them in the region of Avdiivka, and two as a result of explosion of a booby trap.^[79] A female civilian was killed in Avdiivka.^[69] According to separatists sources, Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire on 27 occasions. The Ukrainians opened up with small arms, rocket launchers, armoured fighting vehicles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm guns. Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Sakhanka, Shyrokyne, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[80]

By evening, pro-Russian troops had broken the ceasefire 28 times. The rebels opened fire with small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers on Ukrainian positions at Troitske, Maryinka and Opytne, around Donetsk city; at Luhanske, north of Horlivka, and at Shyrokyne, east of Mariupol. The Ukrainian garrisons at Zaitseve, north of Horlivka, Hranitne, north of Mariupol and Pisky, west of Donetsk city, were the target of small arms fire.^[81][82]

11 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 64 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 10 April.^{[83][84][85][86]} Two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action.^[87] Pro-Russian sources recorded 42 attacks on their positions during the same period. The Ukrainian troops used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. Most incidents took place in Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Spartak, Olenivka, Mineralne, Kominternove, Novomarivka, Sakhanka, Volvo center and Petrovsky district.^[88]

There were 29 attacks on Ukrainian positions throughout the day. Ukrainian troops returned fire on several occasions. In the surroundings of Donetsk, Avdiivka was pounded with 120 mm mortar barrages, while 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Pisky. The rebels attacked Ukrainian troops at Opytne, Butivka mining complex, Nevelske and Maryinka with small arms, sniper fire, heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian redoubts at Novotroitske, north of Mariupol. Nearby Hnutove was the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. The same kind of weapons were fired on Ukrainian troops at Zaitseve, north of Horlivka, and Stanytsia Luhanska, in the northern front.^[89]

12 April

The Ukrainian military reported that separatist forces opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 79 occasions on the past 24 hours. Ukrainian troops fired back on nine instances. Avdiivka was the target of small arms and mortars 19 times. The rebels fired 82 mm and 120 mm mortars on Ukrainian positions at Luhanske, Maiorsk, and Zaitseve, around Horlivka, and Kamyanka, west of Donetsk. Small arms fire was reported at Nevelske, Maryinka and Opytne, around Donetsk city, Zaitseve, Hranitne, north of Mariupol, and Stanytsia Luhanska, Luhansk Oblast, in the northern part of the front. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske, north of Horlivka, Novotroitske, in the region of Mariupol, and Butivka mining complex, in the outskirts of Donetsk city.^[90][91][92] Three Ukrainian soldiers were wounded in action.^[93] Pro-Russian authorities reported 30 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm guns. The main targets were rebel positions at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Dokuchaievsk, Yasinuvata, Vesele, Zhabicheve, Kominternove, Leninsky district and Donetsk airport.^[94]

By evening, rebel troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 31 occasions. Ukrainian forces returned fire seven times. Around Donetsk city, the separatists opened fire on nine occasions on Avdiivka using small arms, heavy machine guns, grenade launchers and mortars. Ukrainian troops launched a counterattack in the area of Mineralne. The Ukrainian checkpoint at Maryinka was the target of hostile snipers, and 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Opytne. In the region of Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured vehicles shelled Ukrainian redoubts at Novhorodske, supported by 82 mm mortar volleys. The rebels also fired mortar barrages at Zaitseve. Separatist forces harassed Ukrainian troops with small arms and automatic grenade launchers at Trokhizbenka, in the northern sector of the demarcation line.^[95]

The United Nations reported on Tuesday, 12 April, that one of its staff members had been captured by pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine's separatist east.^[96][97] Pro-Russian forces reported that they had captured a colonel of Ukraine's Security Service, not representative of the United Nations.^[98]

13 April

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 87 occasions on 12 March.^{[99][100][101][102]} Eight Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action over the past 24 hours.^[103] According to separatist officials, the Ukrainian army broke the truce on 31 occasions. The Ukrainians used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm guns. Most incidents took place at Zaitseve, Makiivka, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Zhabicheve, Sakhanka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. One rebel soldier was killed in action.^[104]

Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 32 attacks on Ukrainian troops throughout the day; the fire was returned on three occasions. Avdiivka was targeted 15 times with small arms and mortar fire. Ukrainian troops at nearby Pisky were harassed with small arms fire, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers. Sniper activity was reported at Maryinka. Around Horlivka, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars landed in Maiorsk and Zaitseve, which was also the target of 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Ukrainian positions at Vodyane, north of Mariupol, were shelled from both light and heavy mortars.^[105]

14 April

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 80 occasions on 13 March; the fire was returned on 12 occasions. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Opytne, west of Donetsk airport, with the support of 152 mm self-propelled artillery and mortar barrages. The main target was once again the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka. The rebels shelled with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars Maiorsk and Zaitseve, in the outskirts of Horlivka, Pisky, southwest of Donetsk city, and Trokhizbenka, in the northern section of the demarcation line. Multiple-weapons attacks took place in several places such as Maryinka, Butivka mining complex, Verkhnyotoretske, Luhanske, Svetlodarsk and Zolote.^{[106][107][108]} One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another wounded in action over the past 24 hours.^[109] Pro-Russian authorities recorded 59 Ukrainian attacks on rebel positions. Ukrainian forces used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm guns and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Sakhanka, Petrovske, Panteleymonivka, Zhabicheve, Staromyhailivka, Vesele, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Petrovsky district, Volvo center and Donetsk airport.^[110]

Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 50 attacks on Ukrainian troops throughout the day. The industrial area of Avdiivka was targeted nine times since the early hours: the separatists fired small arms and rocket propelled grenades. also around Donetsk city, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Butivka mining complex, and 120 mm shells in Opytne. Ukrainian troops at Maryinka were harassed with small arms and rocket launchers. Ukrainian defences at Novotroitske, north of Mariupol, were struck by antiaircraft direct fire from Zu-23-2 cannons. North of Horlivka, Zaitseve was shelled with 82 mm mortar rounds. Rocket propelled grenades landed in Luhanske, which was also the target of automatic fire.^{[111][112][113]}

14 April marked the second anniversary of the beginning of the war.^[112][114]

15 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 104 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 14 April; the fire was returned on 16 occasions.^{[115][116][117]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action and three others wounded in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours; one female civilian was injured by explosion of a booby trap in Luhansk Oblast.^[118] According to separatist officials, the Ukrainian army opened fire on pro-Russian positions on 39 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm guns. Two Ukrainian drones were shot down over Torez.^[119]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had fired Ukrainian positions on 25 occasions; the fire was returned on three occasions. Ukrainian officials acknowledged that the relentless attack on the strongholds of Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city, and Taramchuk and Berezove, north of Mariupol, made the situation in those areas untenable. The separatist fired heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, mortars and antitank guided missile launchers. In other sections of the demarcation line around Donetsk city, Horlivka and Mariupol, pro-Russian forces harassed Ukrainian defences at Verkhnyotoretske, Butivka mining complex, Maiorsk, Luhanske and Shyrokyne. In the northern front, Ukrainian troops were the target of hostile fire at Stanytsia Luhanska and Krimsky.^{[120][121][122]}

16 April

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 61 occasions on 15 March; the fire was returned on 15 occasions.^{[123][124][125]} Two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action over the past 24 hours.^[126] According to rebel sources, the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire 33 times over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian troops used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Zaitseve, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Horlivka, Zhabicheve, Yasinuvata, Staromyhailivka, Petrovsky district, Volvo center and Donetsk airport.^[127]

By evening, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 24 occasions. The rebels attacked the industrial area of Avdiivka with small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and mortars. Hostile snipers fired upon Ukrainian troops at Berezove, north of Mariupol, which was also the target of 82 mm mortars. Other attacks took place at Hranitne and Novotroitske, in the region of Mariupol, Maryinka, west of Donetsk, Luhanske, north of Horlivka, and Popasna and Stanytsia Luhanska, in the northern section of the demarcation line.^{[128][129][130]}

17 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 50 occasions on Ukrainian troops on Saturday, 16 April, including on 15 occasions in the areas surrounding Avdiivka; the fire was returned on 8 occasions.^{[131][132][133][134]} One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and three others wounded in action over the past 24 hours.^[135] Two civil volunteers from Kyiv region were wounded near the village of Pisky.^[136][137] Separatist officials recorded 51 Ukrainian attacks on pro-Russian positions. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. Most incidents occurred at Panteleymonivka, Zaitseve, Ozeryanivka, Horlivka, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Yasne, Vesele, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Kominternove, Petrovsky district, Volvo center and Donetsk airport.^[138]

Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 21 attacks on Ukrainian troops throughout the day. The rebels harassed Ukrainian positions at Avdiivka, Maryinka and Butivka mining complex, in the area west of Donetsk city; Luhanske and Leninske, in the region north of Horlivka, and Starohnativka and Shyrokyne, in the surroundings of Mariupol. The separatists opened fire with small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and antitank missile launchers. In the northern front, pro-Russian forces from Frunze shelled Ukrainian redoubts at Krimsky with automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars.^[139][140]

18 April

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire along the whole front line on 79 occasions over the past 24 hours. The fire was returned on 18 occasions. One Russian-made drone was shot down at Novoselivka, near Volnovakha.^{[141][142][143]} Pro-Russian sources recorded 54 violations of the truce by Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm artillery. The main incidents took place at Horlivka, Zaitseve, Dokuchaievsk, Ozeryanivka, Shyroka Balka, Vesele, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Zhabicheve, Sakhanka, Leninske, Petrovsky district, Volvo center and Donetsk airport.^[144]

The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours. One Ukrainian serviceman died when the vehicle he was driving hit a landmine in Stanytsia Luhanska, in the northern section of the front.^[145][146] Also at Stanytsia Luhanska, Luhansk Oblast administration reported that four soldiers and a border guard were wounded whiile on a foot patrol after an ambush by pro-Russian forces. The rebels fired small arms, heavy machine guns and automatic grenade launchers at the Ukrainian servicemen.^[147] One female civilian was injured in Zaitseve due to shelling.^[148]

Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 18 attacks on Ukrainian troops throughout the day. The separatist fired 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys on the Ukrainian strongholds of Avdiivka, Nevelske and Krasnohorivka, west of Donetsk city, Novhorodske, west of Horlivka, and Taramchuk and Slavne, north of Mariupol. Novotroitske and Berezove, also in the Mariupol area, were pounded by 122 mm artillery rounds. Several Ukrainian positions along the demarcation line were harassed with small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades.^[149][150]

19 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 46 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 18 April, the fire was returned on 19 occasions.^{[151][152][153]} Eight Ukrainian serviceman were wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[154][155] Separatist officials recorded 38 attacks on pro-Russian positions. The Ukrainian army used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fightign vehicles and tanks. The Ukrainian forces attacked the rebel strongholds of Horlivka, Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Ozeryanivka, Mikhaylivka, Dokuchaievsk, Olenivka, Yasne, Panteleymonivka, Vesele, Vasilivka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Petrovsky district, Volvo center and Donetsk airport.^[156]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on eight occasions. The Ukrainian army returned fire at least once. The rebels shelled Avdiivka and Opytne, west of Donetsk city, and Leninske, north of Horlivka, with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Leninske, along with Shyrokyne, east of Mariupol, was also the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers.^[157]

20 April

The Ukrainian military reported 23 attacks on their positions over the last 24 hours.^{[158][159][160]} Three Ukrainian soldiers were killed in action and five others wounded in the same period.^[161][162] According to pro-Russian sources, the Ukrainian military opened fire on separatist troops on 56 occasions. The Ukrainians used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 152 mm howitzers. Most incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Shyroka Balka, Holmivsky, Nikitovka, Verkhnyotoretske, Vesele, Zhabicheve, Yasinuvata, Kominternove, Spartak, Sakhanka, Petrovsky district, Volvo center and Donetsk airport.^[163]

The Ukrainian military said that pro-Russian forces broke the ceasefire on 11 occasions throughout the day. The majority of the attacks took place around Donetsk city and Mariupol. The Ukrainian garrisons of Avdiivka and Maryinka west of Donetsk, and Vodyane, Berezove and Shyrokyne, in the region of Mariupol, were the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers. Talakivka, east of Mariupol, was struck by 82 mm mortar fire. The Ukrainian army returned fire on several occasions.^[164]

The OSCE mission reported an increase of hostilities around Stanytsia Luhanska since 17 April, when they recorded more than 300 explosions. The rebels fired from entrenchments south of the town with automatic grenade launchers, mortars, 30 mm cannons from armoured fighting vehicles and heavy artillery.^[165]

21 April

The Ukrainian military reported 33 attacks on their positions over the last 24 hours. The militias fired 120 mm mortar rounds on Popasna, in the northern front, and 82 mm mortar rounds on Zaitseve, north of Horlivka with 82 mm. Ukrainian troops fired back on 14 occasions.^[166][167] Four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action on 20 April.^[168] Separatist authorities recorded 22 attacks on their forces over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian army made use of small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The main targets were Yasinuvata, Kominternove, Petrovsky district, Volvo center and Donetsk airport.^[169]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on nine occasions. Mortar rounds landed in Avdiivka and Shyrokyne. Ukrainian positions at Pervomaisk and Trudovske were also targeted. The rebels used small arms, automatic grenade launchers and antitank missiles launchers. The Ukrainian army returned fire twice with heavy machine guns and rocket launchers.^[170]

22 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 30 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 21 April, including on 7 occasions from weapons banned by the Minsk agreements. The fire was returned on 7 occasions.^{[171][172][173]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[174] Pro-Russian officials denounced 21 violations of the truce by Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainians used small arms, grenade launchers, 82mm and 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles.^[175]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 7 attacks on Ukrainian positions throughout the day. Avdiivka was three times the target of 82 mm mortar barrages. Ukrainian redoubts at Trokhizbenka, in the northern section of the demarcation line, and Shyrokyne, east of Mariupol, were pounded with rocket launchers. Also at Shyrokyne, hostile snipers harassed Ukrainian troops.^[176][177] The fire was returned on 2 occasions.^[178]

23 April

The Ukrainian military reported 19 attacks on their positions over the last 24 hours. Ukrainian troops fired back on 9 occasions.^[179][180] Two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action on 22 April.^[181] Separatist officials reported 22 Ukrainian violations of the truce over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. Most incidents occurred at Horlivka, Zaitseve, Yasinuvata, Shyroka Balka, Vasilivka, Dokuchaievs, Panteleymonivka, Kruta Balka, Yasne, Sakhanka and Petrovsky district.^[182]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on 27 occasions. Ukrainian positions at the industrial area of Avdiivka were the target of continued attacks, specially from 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Mortar rounds also landed in the stronghold of Opytne. Ukrainian redoubts at Maryinka, west of Donetsk city, Berezove and Starohnativka, north of Mariupol, and Zaitseve, in the northern outskirts of Horlivka were pounded with small arms fire, heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. The Ukrainian military acknowledged that they returned fire several times on pro-Russian redoubts at Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk and Mineralne firing small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers.^[183]

24 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 41 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 23 April.^{[184][185][186]} Three Ukrainian servicemen were killed and another six wounded in action in the Donbas region over the past 24 hours.^[187] One of the wounded Ukrainian soldiers died of wounds shortly after.^[188] Separatist officials recorded 36 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fightign vehicles and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were Sakhanka, Zaitseve, Dokuchaievsk, Trudovske and Donetsk airport.^[189]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 9 attacks on Ukrainian positions throughout the day. The village of Pravdivka, north of Avdiivka, suffered extensive damage to the local church and civilian residences when shelled with 152 mm howitzers. Avdiivka itself was the target of mortar barrages, as well as Zaitseve, north of Horlivka. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske, in the same area, supported by small arms and grenade launchers. The rebels also fired small arms and rocket propelled grenades at the Ukrainian stronghold of Maryinka, west of Donetsk city.^[190]

25 April

The Ukrainian military reported 29 attacks on their positions over the last 24 hours. The fire was returned on 4 occasions.^{[191][192][193]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[188] Pro-Russian sources reported seven Ukrainian violations of the truce. The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The incidents occurred at Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Staromyhailivka and Abakumove.^[194]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 14 attacks on Ukrainian positions throughout the day; the fire was returned on 3 occasions. The main target of rebel forces were Ukrainian redoubts around Novotroitske, north of Mariupol, which were pounded with small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars. The nearby stronghold of Taramchuk was also shelled by the separatists. West of Donetsk city, Ukrainian troops at Avdiivka and Maryinka were harassed with small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. Sniper activity was reported at Luhanske, north of Horlivka.^[195]

26 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 42 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 25 April, the fire was returned on 13 occasions.^{[196][197][198]} According to the spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, one Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action and five others wounded in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[199] According to Information Resistance total 20 wounded Ukrainian servicemen were hospitalized on 24 and 25 April.^[200] Separatists authorities recorded 21 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian army attacked pro-Russian positions with small arms, rocket propelled grenades, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. The Ukrainian military fired banned heavy weapons at Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Zaitseve, Olenivka, Sakhanka and Petrovsky district.^[201]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 10 attacks on Ukrainian positions throughout the day, most of which took place in the outskirts of Donetsk city. Avdiivka was shelled with 82 mm mortars, while pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened up on Ukrainian redoubts at Krasnohorivka and Slavne, supprted by automatic grenade launchers. Maryinka was the target of small arms, sniper fire, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. The same kind of weapons were used against the Ukrainian strongholds of Novotroitske, north of Mariupol, and Stanytsia Luhanska, in the northern sector of the demarcation line.^[202][203]

27 April

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 30 occasions over the past 24 hours.^{[204][205][206][207]} A two-and-a-half-hour long engagement between the warring parties took place in Avdiivka.^[208] Five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[209] Separatist authorities reported 16 violations of the ceasefire by Ukrainian troops. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to target pro-Russian positions at Sakhanka, Kominternove, Olenivka, Yasinuvata, Novomarivka, Zaitseve, Zhabunki, Gagarin mining complex, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[210]

At least four civilians were killed, including a pregnant woman, and many wounded when a checkpoint at Olenivka, south of Donetsk city, was shelled after midnight.^{[211][212][213][214][215]} Pro-Russian sources, who blamed the Ukrainian army for the attack, put the civilian fatalities in the incident at six.^[210]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on 10 occasions. In the area around Donetsk, the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka was the target of small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened up on Ukrainian redoubts at Taramchuk, while Ukrainian troops at Starohnativka were harassed with small arms fire. Ukrainian positions around Popasna, Luhansk Oblast, in the northern front, also received fire from small caliber weapons.^[216]

28 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 29 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours, including on 20 occasions during the last 6 hours of 27 April.^{[217][218][219]} One Ukrainian soldier was reported wounded in action in Maryinka over the past 24 hours.^[220][221] Pro-Russian officials reported 28 violations of the truce by Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian military used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The main targets were Sakhanka, Gagarin mining complex, Yasne, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Zaitseve, Kominternove, Zhabicheve, Yasinuvata and Petrovsky district.^[222]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 10 attacks on Ukrainian positions throughout the day. The main flashpoint was the Ukrainian stronghold of Shyrokyne, east of Mariupol, where the rebels opened fire with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Sniper activity was reported at Maryinka, east of Donetsk city.^[223]

29 April

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 22 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours.^{[224][225][226]} Three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action over the past 24 hours. The casualties occurred in Shyrokyne that is about 10 km east of Mariupol.^[227] Separatist sources denounced 28 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The main targets were pro-Russian positions at Yasinuvata, Shyroka Balka, Yasne, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Dokuchaievsk, Trudovske, Abakumove, Panteleymonivka, Staromyhailivka, Kruta Balka, Spartak, Zaitseve, Olenivka, Gagarin mining complex and Donetsk airport.^[228]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on 14 occasions.^[229][230]

The trilateral contact group on Ukraine that met in Belarus capital Minsk said that it will work for the new ceasefire to become effective on 30 April at midnight local time, in coincidence with the celebration of Orthodox Easter. The renewed truce would last in principle until 4 May.^[231]

30 April

Ukrainian officials recorded 40 attacks on their troops over the past 24 hours. A pro-Russian drone dropped bombs in the rear guard area of Lozuvatske, northwest of Avdiivka.^{[232][233][234]} According to the spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO two Ukrainian servicemen were killed in action and four others wounded in the Donbass region on 29 April.^[235] Separatist sources recorded 41 violations of the truce by Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian army opened fire with small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars on pro-Russian positions at Yasinuvata, Zaitseve, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Oleksandrivka, Kominternove, Zhabicheve, Staromyhalivka and Petrovsky district.^[236]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 10 attacks on Ukrainian positions throughout the day. West of Donetsk, Avdiivka and Maryinka were the target of small arms and grenade launchers. In the region of Mariupol, rocket propelled grenades and mortar rounds landed in Vodyane and Shyrokyne. In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian forces attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Trokhizbenka with machine guns and rocket launchers.^[237][238]

May

1 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 27 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours. One of the flashpoints was the Ukrainian stronghold of Vodyane, where pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened up on Ukrainian redoubts, supported by 120 mm mortars.^{[239][240][241]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action by a rocket propelled grenade near Svetlodarsk dam, north of Horlivka during the last day of April. Seven others were wounded, five in the industrial area of Avdiivka and two in the region of Mariupol.^[242] A Ukrainian soldier died of wounds in Charité hospital Germany. Pro-Russian sniper had wounded him with a dum-dum bullet in Zaitseve on 5 September last year.^[243] Rebel sources reported that Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire on 20 occasions. Two pro-Russian soldiers were killed in action.^[244]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched no attacks on Ukrainian positions on May Day.^[245][246] Separatist authorities recorded instead the shelling of rebel positions at Slavne, west of Olenivka and around Donetsk airport, at Opytne and Avdiivka. The Ukrainian troops fired 120 mm and 82 mm mortars.^[247]

2 May

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 6 occasions over the past 24 hours. There was harassment fire on Ukrainian positions around Donetsk city and at Shyrokyne, east of Mariupol. Also in the Mariupol area, rocket launchers and antiaircraft cannons were fired at Ukrainian troops near Hranitne.^{[248][249][250]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region during the first day of May.^[251] Eduard Basurin, deputy minister of defence of Donetsk's People Republic, reported nine Ukrainian violations of the Easter ceasefire. The Ukrainian military fired small arms, rocket propelled grenades, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars on pro-Russian positions.The incidents took place at Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Olenivka, Zhabicheve, 6-7 coal mine at Horlivka and Donetsk airport.^[252]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on 2 occasions. The rebels harassed Ukrainian troops at Luhanske, north of Horlivka, with small arms fire and poured 120 mm mortar shells on Ukrainian positions at Nevelske.^[253]

3 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 5 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours; no ceasefire violations were registered during the first 6 hours of 3 May.^[254][255] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 2 May.^[256] No ceasefire violations were recorded in Luhansk Oblast.^[256] Separatist authorities denounced 14 violations of the ceasefire by Ukrainian troops. The Ukrainian army fired small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. Ukrainian tanks shelled pro-Russian positions on two occasions. The incidents took place at Zaitseve, Zhdanove, Staromyhailivka, Yasinuvata, Abakumove, Gagarin mining complex and Donetsk airport.^[257]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had broken the ceasefire on 3 May once – a pro-Russian sniper was active in the region of Maryinka, 21.3 km WSW from the center of Donetsk city.^[258][259]

4 May

The spokesman of the ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 6 occasions over the past 24 hours.^{[260][261][262]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action at Maryinka.^[263] A farmer was seriously injured when the tractor he was riding on hit a mine at Hnutove.^[263][264] No ceasefire violations were recorded in Luhansk Oblast.^[263] Pro-Russian sources recorded 14 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military pounded rebel positions with small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm guns. The main incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Sakhanka, Ozeryanivka, Zeleznaya Balka, Yasinuvata and Donetsk airport.^[265]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on 5 occasions. The main target of the rebels were Ukrainian strongholds in the region of Mariupol, where 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Shyrokyne and Hnutove. The militias fired small arms and rocket launchers at Ukrainian positions at Vodyane and Novotroitske. Pro-Russian troops harassed Ukrainian redoubts near Luhanske, north of Horlivka, with small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades.^[266]

A 62-year-old farmer hit an anti-personnel mine with his tractor in Sartana and was hospitalised for further observation.^[267] The similar incident had taken place the previous day at Hnutove.^[264] The incident in Sartana was the fourth incident of similar kind since the beginning of 2016, and the ninth since the beginning of ATO in April 2014.^[267]

5 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 13 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours. No ceasefire violations were recorded during the first 6 hours of 5 May.^{[268][269][270]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded by explosion of a landmine in the Donbass region on 4 May.^[271] No ceasefire violations were recorded in Luhansk Oblast.^[271] Pro-Russian authorities recorded five violations of the ceasefire by Ukrainian forces using small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian military opened fire on rebel positions at Shyroka Balka, Kominternove, Dokuchaievsk and Donetsk airport.^[272]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire once – sniper activity was reported at Maryinka.^[273][274] Separatist sources reported mortar barrages on pro-Russian redoubts at Spartak in the morning, fired by Ukrainian forces from Butivka. Horlivka was the target of Ukrainian troops firing from Svetlodarsk. Explosions were heard from the northwest area of Maryinka.^[275][276]

6 May

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 11 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours.^{[277][278][279]} One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 5 May.^[280] Pro-Russian reports recorded just one violation of the "silent mode" by the Ukrainian army on 5 May.^{[281][nb 1]} Separatist sources denounced that Ukrainian forces shelled Dokuchaievsk, Donetsk airport and Spartak with 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and antitank guided missiles fired from Novotroitske, Opytne and Butivka mining complex.^[282] Another report says that the shelling was preceded by an armoured fighting vehicle attack on Dokuchaievsk, in the industrial area of Donetsk city. Meanwhile, in the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian positions at Kalinove were the target of heavy machine guns and automatic grenade launchers fired from Ukrainian troops at Novozvanivka. Two rebel soldiers were reported killed and another wounded over the past seven days.^[281]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on three occasions. The rebels fired small arms and heavy machine guns at Ukrainian positions in Hranitne and Hnutove, north of Mariupol, and at the stronghold of Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city.^[283][284]

7 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 7 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours.^{[285][286][287]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 6 May.^[288][289] Three Ukrainian servicemen were injured by the blast of an unidentified explosive device near the village of Bakhchovyk, Volnovakha region.^[288] No ceasefire violations were recorded in Luhansk Oblast.^[288] Separatist authorities reported four violations of the truce by the Ukrainian army in Zaitseve, Spartak, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district. Ukrainian forces opened fire 25 times on rebel positions with small arms, grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. One pro-Russian soldier was killed and another wounded in action.^[290]

Pro-Russian forces broke the ceasefire agreement on eight occasions throughout the day. Rebel snipers harassed Ukrainian troops at Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city, Shyrokyne, east of Mariupol, and Luhanske, north of Horlivka. The separatists also opened up with small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers on the Ukrainian strongholds of Avdiivka, Luhanske and Taramchuk, north of Mariupol.^[291][292]

8 May

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 12 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours. In the surroundings of Donetsk city, the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka was the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. The village of Taramchuk, north of Mariupol, was shelled from grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts near Luhanske, north of Horlivka. In the northern section of the demarcation line, the separatists fired automatic grenade launchers at Stanytsia Luhanska.^{[293][294][295][296]} One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 7 May.^[297] No ceasefire violations were recorded in Luhansk Oblast.^[297] Pro-Russian sources reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on their positions on 63 occasions. The incidents took place at Kruta Balka, Zaitseve, Mineralne, Luhanske, Yasne, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Vesele, Gagarin mining complex, 6-7 coal mine and Donetsk airport. The Ukrainian military used small arms fire, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles.^[298]

9 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 9 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours.^{[300][301][302]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and other four wounded and injured in the Donbass region on 8 May.^[303] Separatist sources said that the Ukrainian army opened fire on 163 occasions on rebel positions. Ukrainian forces used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian redoubts at Yakovlivka, Abakumove, Spartak, Staromarivka, Vasilivka, Naverezhne, Sakhanka, Tauricheske, Gagarin mining complex, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[304]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on 5 occasions. Around Donetsk city, Avdiivka was again the main target of the rebel troops, which fired at Ukrainian positions with small arms, sniper fire, heavy machine guns and different systems of grenade launchers. The same kind of weapons were used against Luhanske, in the region between Horlivka and Svetlodarsk. In the area of Mariupol, pro-Russian militias fired antitank rockets at Shyrokyne.^[305][306]

10 May

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 15 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 9 May; during the first six hours of 10 May six ceasefire violations were registered. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles, supported by rocket launchers and antitank guided missiles, attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske, north of Horlivka, and at Starohnativka and Shyrokyne, in the region of Mariupol. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, rebel snipers were active at Maryinka, while Avdiivka was the target of small arms, grenade launchers and antiaircraft cannons.^{[308][309][310]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and two others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 9 May.^[311] The casualties occurred when a Ukrainian military truck hit an anti-tank mine in the region of Mariupol.^[311] According to pro-Russian sources, Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 105 occasions. The Ukrainian military made use of small arms, rocket launchers, armoured fighting vehicles and 82 mm mortars. The main targets were Vesele, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Mineralne, Sakhanka, Tauricheske, Abakumove, Vasilivka, Belaya Kamyanka, Viktorivka and Donetsk airport.^[312]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 11 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours.^{[315][316][317]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and three others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 10 May.^[318] All the casualties were caused by explosions of explosive devices.^[318] Two civilians, employees of a thermal power station, were injured by explosion of a grenade launcher's ammunition that was hidden underground.^[318] Separatist authorities reported that Ukrainian forces opened up on their positions on 154 occasions. The Ukrainian military used small arms, rocket propelled grenades, 82 mm and 120 mm mkortars and armoured fighting vehicles. Three pro-Russian soldiers were wounded in action. The main incidents occurred at Spartak, Yasinuvata, Zaitseve, Gagarin mining complex, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[319]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on four occasions. The separatists launched rocket propelled grenades at Ukrainian-manned outposts in Maryinka, west of Donetsk city. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian positions at Novooleksandrivka and Shchastya were harassed with smalls arms fire. In the region of Mariupol, the Ukrainian stronghold of Hranitne was the target of recoilless gun fire.^{[320][321][322]}

12 May

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 15 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 11 May.^{[323][324][325]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 11 May.^[326] Pro-Russian sources said that Ukrainian troops opened fire on their positions on 108 instances on 11 May using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars and tanks. The main incidents took place at Yasinuvata, Yasne, Zaitseve, Spartak, Sakhanka, Nikolaeva, Dokuchaievsk, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[327]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 10 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours.^{[329][330][331]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 12 May.^[332] Two Ukrainian servicemen were injured by explosions of explosive devices in the agglomeration of Horlivka.^[332] Three civilians were injured by a grenade explosion in the rebel-held village of Krasny Partizan, Donetsk Oblast.^[333] Separatist reports said that Ukrainian forces attacked pro-Russian positions with small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm recoilless guns, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. The Ukrainian army opened fire at rebel positions in the villages of Dokuchaievsk, Kalinovka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Makiyivka and Putilivka.^[334] Four pro-Russian soldiers were killed in action and other four wounded over the past week.^[335]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on nine occasions. The main flashpoint continued to be industrial area of Avdiivka, where Ukrainian troops were attacked five times with small arms, sniper fire, heavy machine guns and different rocket launcher systems. In the region of Mariupol, the Ukrainian strongholds of Berezove and Novotroitske were pounded with heavy machine guns and automatic grenade launchers.^[336][337]

14 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 20 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours and at least on 2 occasions during the first 6 hours of 14 May.^{[338][339][340]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that seven Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 13 May.^[341][342] Pro-Russian sources reported 172 Ukrainian attacks on their positions. The Ukrainian army fired small arms, grenade launchers 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. The main incidents took place at Zaitseve, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Sakhanka, Kruta Balka, Vasilivka, Dokuchaievsk, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[343]

The separatist continued their shelling on Ukrainian positions at Shyrokyne, east of Mariupol, which were hit by 82 mm mortar barrages. In the northern front -Luhansk Oblast- pro-Russian troops fired heavy machine guns, antiaircraft cannons and automatic grenade launchers.^[344] Two female civilians were injured by the explosion of a booby trap in Maryinka.^[345]

A car bomb exploded in downtown Donetsk, according to separatist sources. One man was killed and two others wounded.^[346]

15 May

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 16 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 14 May. The stronghold of Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city, was the target of small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. Also around Donetsk, rebel snipers harassed Ukrainian troops at Maryinka. In the area north of Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles shelled Ukrainian redoubts around Svetlodarsk dam, supported by heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. East of Mariupol, separatist troops pounded Ukrainian marines positions at Shyrokyne with grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars.^{[347][348][349]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 14 May.^[350] Separatist authorities reported 228 Ukrainian attacks on rebel positions using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. Yakovlivka, Mineralne, Sakhanka, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Aleksandrivka, Staromyhailivka and Petrovsky district.^[351]

A rebel assault, preceded by rocket propelled grenades, antiaircraft fire and 82 mm mortar volleys was repelled near Opytne. Pro-Russian tanks shelled the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka, supported by 120 mm mortar barrages and 122 mm artillery.^{[354][355][356]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another wounded in action in the Donbass region on 15 May.^[357] Two civilians were injured too.^[357] Separatist sources said that Ukrainian troops opened fire 340 times on pro-Russian positions using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antitank guns and tanks. The attacks took place at Kruta Balka, Zaitseve, Novomariivka, Oleksandrivka, Sakhanka, Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Oktyabr, Nikolaevka, Mineralne, Staromyhailivka, Donetsk airport, Petrovsky district and northwest Donetsk.^[358]

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 18 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 16 May and on 6 occasions during the first six hours of 17 May. Novotroitske, north of Mariupol, was the target of 120 mm mortar fire, while Ukrainian redoubts at Novozvanivka and Troikhizbenka, in the northern section of the demarcation line, received small arms and heavy machine gun fire.^{[361][362][363]} Five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 16 May.^[364] Pro-Russian authorities denounced that Ukrainian forces opened fire on 232 occasions on rebel troops. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm artillery. Most incidents occurred at Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Kurgan Mohyla Baba, Sakhanka, Holmivskyi, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[365]

Ukrainian troops at nearby Avdiivka were the target of machine gun fire. The rebels opened up on Zaitseve, north of Horlivka, with small arms.^[366]

18 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 24 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours. The main actions involved the shelling of Slavne, in the region of Mariupol, from banned 152 mm self-propelled artillery, the bombardment of Ukrainian redoubts at Avdiivka with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, automatic fire on Ukrainian troops at Trokhizbenka and Stanytsia Luhanska, in the northern front, and an airstrike carried out by pro-Russian drones on UkraInian trenches near Mariupol, which left no casualties.^{[367][368][369][370]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that ten Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 17 May.^[371] The deputy defense minister of the Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin reported 557 instances in which Ukrainian forces opened fire on pro-Russian positions. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The main incidents took place at Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Staromykhailivka, Zaitseve, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[372]

19 May

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 17 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 18 May.^{[375][376][377]} Two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and two wounded in action in the Donbass region on 18 May. The two soldiers were killed by snipers, one of them in Avdiivka and the other in Stanytsia Luhanska.^[378] One male civilian was killed and another injured when a tractor they were driving on hit an unidentified explosive device in Pavlopil, Donetsk Oblast. The incident in Pavlopil was the fifth incident of similar kind since the beginning of 2016.^[378] According to separatist sources, the Ukrainian army opened fire 326 times on pro-Russian positions. The Ukrainian forces used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, antitank guided missiles, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. The main actions occurred at Dokuchaievsk, Olenivka, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Vesele, Novomariivka, Abakumove, Staromyhailivka, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[379]

In the outskirts of Donetsk city, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Avdiivka, while pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian positions at Krasnohorivka. In the region of Mariupol, hostile snipers harassed Ukrainian troops at Novotroitske and Berezove was hit by rocket propelled grenades. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian forces at Trokhizbenka received small arms fire.^{[380][381][382]}

20 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 15 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 19 May and at least on 3 occasions during the first six hours of 20 May.^{[383][384][385]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 19 May.^[386] One Ukrainian sevicemen was killed and four others injured due to careless handling of explosive devices.^[386] Separatists sources reported three pro-Russian soldiers killed and three others wounded in action over the past week.^[387]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 5 attacks on Ukrainian positions throughout the day. The main actions took place in the region around Mariupol, where rebel forces targeted Ukrainian troops at Novotroitske with heavy machine gun fire, and with sniper fire near Taramchuk.^[388]

21 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 20 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 20 May, and on six occasions during the first 6 hours of 21 May.^{[389][390][391]} Six Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[392] Separatists authorities reported that Ukrainian forces opened up 204 times on pro-Russian positions with small arms, rocket propelled grenades, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. The main incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Staromykhailivka, Zhabicheve, Oleksandrivka, Sakhanka, Leninske, Kurgan Mohyla Baba, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[393]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that as of 06:00 pm rebel troops had launched 13 attacks on Ukrainian forces. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles, supported by rocket launchers and mortars, shelled the Ukrainian stronghold of Starohnativka, north of Mariupol. Sniper fire on Ukrainian troops was reported at Shyrokyne. In Avdiivka, west of Donetsk, the separatists fired small arms and grenade launchers on Ukrainian redoubts.^[394][395]

22 May

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 30 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 21 May, and at least on six occasions during the first 6 hours of 22 May.^{[396][397][398]} One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another wounded in action in the Donbass region on 21 May. The casualties were the result of heavy shelling on the industrial area of Avdiivka, where the rebels used banned 122 mm artillery.^[399] Separatist authorities reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 193 occasions with small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. The main incidents occurred at Spartak, Zabicheve, Sakhanka, Yasinuvata, Vesele, Velaya Kamyanka, Trudovske Oleksandrivka, Kominternove, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[400]

23 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 31 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours. Heavy shelling was reported once again on the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka. The separatists used 82 mm mortars. Ukrainian troops at nearby Krasnohorivka also received antiaircraft cannon fire. In the region around Mariupol, the village of Shyrokyne was fired at from 152 mm self-propelled artillery, while 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire pounded the village of Novotroitske. The rebels launched guided antitank missiles on Ukrainian outposts at Pavlopil.^{[403][404][405]} One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and three others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 22 May. All the casualties occurred in the industrial area of Avdiivka.^[406] Pro-Russian authorities said that the Ukrainian army opened fire on Ukrainian positions 308 times over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. The main targets were pro-Russian troops at Yasinuvata, Staromyhailivka, Spartak, Vesele, Sakhanka, Dokuchaievsk, Sosnovke, Kominternove, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[407]

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 47 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 23 May, and on nine occasions during the first 6 hours of 24 May.^{[410][411][412]} At least seven Ukrainian servicemen were killed and at least nine others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 23 May, the heaviest daily toll over the past year. The casualties were the result of either heavy shelling or improvised explosive devices.^{[413][414][415]} Two Aidar volunteer battalion fighters were killed during a raid on rebel positions behind the demarcation line.^[416] Separatist media reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on 585 occasions on their troops. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. The targets were rebel outposts at Nova Tavriya, Chelyuskintshev coal mine, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Sakhanka, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Oleksandrivka, Stila, Petrovske, Zhabicheve, Nikolaevka, Sosnovske, Vesele, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[417]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on 13 occasions. Rebel troops poured small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades on Ukrainian positions around Avdiivka. Sniper activity was reported at Maryinka, in the same area.^[418][419]

25 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 33 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 24 May and on 4 occasions during the first six hours of 25 May.^{[420][421][422]} Ukrainian troops claimed the destruction of a pro-Russian BMP-1 armoured fighting vehicle during a rebel attempt to break through the demarcation line at Novotroitske, north of Mariupol.^[423] Two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[424] It was announced that two Ukrainian servicemen were taken prisoners near Donetsk city.^[424] Pro-Russian authorities reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on 244 occasions on their positions along the demarcation line. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, antitank missiles launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. The main targets were Panteleymonivka, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Vesele, Yasinuvata, Spartak and Donetsk airport.^[425]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched at least 10 attacks on Ukrainian forces. Around Donetsk city, the stronghold of Avdiivka was the target of small arms, heavy machine guns, grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. The rebels fired rocket propelled grenades at Ukrainian positions near Krasnohorivka, and Ukrainian troops at Maryinka were harassed by sniper fire. In the region of Mariupol, Berezove and Hnutove were shelled from automatic grenade launchers. Hostile snipers were active at Zaitseve, north of Horlivka.^[426]

Female Ukrainian army officer, pilot and member of the Ukrainian Parliament Nadiya Savchenko, who spent almost two years in Russian custody accused of the death of two Russian journalists in a mortar attack in the Donbass on 17 June 2014, was released today in exchange for two Russian soldiers captured in eastern Ukraine.^[427]

26 May

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 28 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 25 May. The incidents involved yet another botched assault on Ukrainian strongpoints around Novotroitske, south of Donetsk city, in which the rebels launched antitank missiles. Ukrainian trenches at Zaitseve, north of Horlivka, were the target of 82 mm mortar volleys, while pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian troops near Novozvanivka, in the northern front, supported by heavy machine guns and antiaircraft artillery.^{[428][429][430]} Two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 25 May.^[431] Pro-Russian sources said that the Ukrainian army opened fire on their positions 194 times. The Ukrainian troops used small arms, grenade launchers, antitank missiles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. The Ukrainians attacked the separatist strongholds of Zaitseve, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Vesele, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[432]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on 11 occasions. The main targets were Avdiivka and Maryinka, west of Donetsk city, and Taramchuk and Berezove, in the region of Mariupol. Separatist forces used rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars.^[433][434]

27 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 30 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 26 May and on 8 occasions during the first six hours of 27 May. In the main actions, heavy shelling was reported at Avdiivka and Opytne, west of Donetsk city, where the rebels fired 82 mm and 120 mm mortar barrages on Ukrainian defences. Nearby Krasnohorivka was the target of snipers, automatic grenade launchers and antiaircraft artillery. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Zaitseve, north of Horlivka, supported by small arms and rocket launchers. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar rounds landed at Shyrokyne, while Ukrainian troops at Hnutove and Novotroitske received antiaircraft fire. In the northern front, pro-Russian forces fired heavy machine guns and grenade launchers at Stanytsia Luhanska.^{[435][436][437]} Fourteen Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours, some of them when a BTR-80 armoured infantry carrier hit a landmine at Starohnativka, north of Mariupol. The others were wounded in battle in the area west of Donetsk city.^[438] An OSCE unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down while flying over the outskirts of Horlivka.^[439] Ukrainian sources claimed that the drone was shot down by pro-Russian forces.^[438] Separatist officials reported the death of two soldiers during heavy fighting around Yasinuvata.^[440] Another two rebel soldiers were killed in action over the past week.^[441] An OSCE patrol close to Yasynuvata investigating an incident was fired upon.^[442]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched 11 attacks on Ukrainian forces. Novotroitske, north of Mariupol, was shelled from 82 mm mortars. Ukrainian troops there were also harassed by sniper fire. The rebels fired heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades at Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city. North of Horlivka, small arms fire was reported at Zaitseve and Luhanske.^[443]

28 May

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 40 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 27 May and on 14 occasions during the first six hours of 28 May. The violations of the ceasefire involved the use of "Grad" multiple rocket launchers to strike Ukrainian defences around Novotroitske.^{[444][445][446]} For their part, OSCE recorded 405 ceasefire violations on 27 May.^[447] One Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action in the Donbass region on 27 May.^[448] The serviceman died in the course of an engagement with pro-Russian scouts near Mariupol.^[448][449] Donetsk People's Republic deputy minister of defence, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on pro-Russian positions on 266 occasions. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, antitank missiles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, 122 mm artillery and 152 mm howitzers. The main incidents took place at Yasinuvata, Zaitseve, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Mineralne, Zhabicheve, Sakhanka, Velaya Kamyanka, Oktyabr, Zhabicheve, Donetsk airport, Petrovsky and Kuybishev districts.^[450]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire 16 times. West of Donetsk city, the rebels shelled Opytne and Avdiivka with 122 mm artillery fire, while small arms fire was reported in Krasnohorivka and Verkhnyotoretske. In the region of Mariupol, Shyrokyne was the target of small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. Novotroitske was struck by 82 mm mortar barrages, and Ukrainian positions at Hranitne were harassed with automatic fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts near Novozvanivka, supported by antiaircraft artillery fire. The rebels pounded Stanytsia Luhanska and Stepne with rocket launchers.^[451]

29 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 30 occasions on Ukrainian positions on Saturday, 28 May.^{[452][453][454]} Five Ukrainian servicemen were killed and four others wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^{[455][456][457][458]} Two rebels were killed in the same period.^[458][459] Separatist authorities recorded 237 attacks on their troops by Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian army used small arms, grenade launchers 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, tanks, 122 mm artillery and 152 mm howitzers. The main targets were Yasinuvata, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Zhabicheve, Staromyhailivka, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[460]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched nine attacks on Ukrainian forces. The main flashpoint was Avdiivka, where Ukrainian positions were pounded from small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. In tha area around Horlivka, Ukrainian troops at Luhanske and Novhorodske were harassed with small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian forces fired antitank guided missiles on Shyrokyne and Lebedynske.^[461]

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 25 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 29 May. The incidents included the shelling of Avdiivka and several settlements in the region of Mariupol from banned 120 mm mortars.^{[462][463][464]} Three Ukrainian servicemen were killed and eight others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 29 May.^{[465][466][467]} No ceasefire violations were registered in Luhansk Oblast.^[465] Donetsk People's Republic deputy minister of defence, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on pro-Russian positions on 475 occasions. The Ukrainian military used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, 122 mm artillery and 152 mm howitzers. The target were rebel troops at Dokuchaievsk, Yasinuvata, Yasne, Vesele, Krasny Partizan, Zhabicheve, Staromyhailivka, Naberezhne, Malo Kominternove, Oktyabr, Abakumove, Sakhanka, Zaitseve, Kulikova, Gagarin mining complex, 6-7 coal mine, Petrovske, Spartak, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[468]

By evening, pro-Russian forces had broken the ceasefire on five occasions. The rebels shelled Novobakhmutivka and Verkhnyotoretske, in the surroundings of Donetsk with 120 mm mortars. Ukrainian troops at nearby Krasnohorivka were harassed with small arms fire. Novotroitske was hit by small arms and heavy machine gun fire. Ukrainian redoubts around Talakivka, in the region of Mariupol, were pounded with small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades.^[469]

31 May

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 21 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 30 May. The main action involved the fall of 120 mm mortar volleys on Verkhnyotoretske, Novobakhmutivka, Krasnohorivka and Opytne, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and the attack of pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles on Ukrainian redoubts at Zaitseve, north of Horlivka, and Stanytsia Luhanska, in the northern front.^{[470][471][472]} One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and two others wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[473] Pro-Russian authorities denounced that the Ukrainian military opened fire on their positions 114 times. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. The main targets were Zaitseve, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Vesele, Dokuchaievsk, Staromyhailivka, Zhabicheve, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[474]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched at least 14 attacks on Ukrainian forces. Separatist forces kept up their pressure on Stanytsia Luhanska, in the northern section of the demarcation line, by firing heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. In the area surrounding Donetsk city, Opytne was the target of 82 mm mortar fire, while Ukrainian troops at Avdiivka were fired at from small arms, snipers, heavy machine guns and automatic grenade launchers. 1 June

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 31 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 31 May.^{[477][478][479]} One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and three others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 31 May.^[480] Separatist sources reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on their positions on 211 occasions. The Ukrainian army used small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The main targets were Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Zhelezne Balka, Mineralne, Kruta Balka, Dolomitne, Krasny Partizan, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Staromyhailivka, Kominternove, Oktyabr, Sakhanka, Abakumove, Gagarin mining complex, Leninske, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district.^[481]

The Ukrainian military denounced 25 violations of the ceasefire by rebel troops. In the region of Mariupol, the separatists opened fire on Ukrainian positions at Novotroitske, Vodyane and Shyrokyne with small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. Later in the day, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Shyrokyne. Avdiivka, west of Donetsk, was also the target of small arms, heavy machine guns, grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. Pro-Russian BMP-1 armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian fortifications at Svetlodarsk dam, north of Horlivka.^[482] As a result of a compromise between the warring factions, more than 70 m of the Krasnohorivka-Maryinka gas pipeline were repaired.^[482] The rebels claimed that Ukraine was beginning an offensive on Donetsk Airport.^[483]

2 June

The Ukrainian military recorded 51 attacks by rebel forces^[484] and reported that three of their soldiers were wounded on the previous day. The casualties occurred near Troitske and Zaitseve.^[485][486] According to separatist officials, Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel troops on 322 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. The report also mentions that Ukrainian drones flew over the demarcation line near Zaitseve to direct mortar fire. The Ukrainian military targeted pro-Russian positions around Kominternove, Sakhanka, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Yakovlivka, Yasinuvata, Zhabicheve, Trudovske, Zaitseve, Verkhnyotoretske, Donetsk airport and Petrovsky district. In Petrovsky, one civilian was killed and another injured.^[487]

Throughout the day, pro-Russian troops carried out 11 attacks on Ukrainian troops. The Ukrainian stronghold of Novotroitske, north of Mariupol, was the target of heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars, while 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Pavlopil. Recoilless antitank guns were fired upon Ukrainian positions at Berezove. In the region of Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles shelled Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske, while Zaitseve was struck by 82 mm mortar volleys. Sniper fire was reported by Ukrainian troops at Stanytsia Luhanska, in the northern front.^[488]

An OSCE release reported that one of their unmanned aerial vehicles was shot down over the village of Korsun, 31km northeast of Donetsk city.^[489]

3 June

According to the Ukrainian army, rebel forces opened fire on 49 occasions on Ukrainian positions over the past 24 hours. Ukrainian troops returned fire.^[490] Ukrainian forces shot down a pro-Russian drone over Smolyaninove, near the river Seversky Donets, in the northern front.^[491][492] Eight Ukrainian soldiers were wounded in action.^[493] In the same period, a member of the pro-Russian 9th Mechanized Marine Brigade from Novoazovsk was killed in action.^[494]

By evening, rebels had attacked Ukrainian positions 17 times. In the area of Donetsk city, The Ukrainian strongholds of Krasnohorivka and Maryinka were the target of small arms fire, rocket propelled grenades, 82 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. In the region of Mariupol, the separatists launched antitank guided missiles on Ukrainian redoubts around Novotroitske. Rebel forces fired heavy machine guns and rocket launchers at Berezove, Shyrokyne and Hranitne. Ukrainian fortifications near Pavlopil were shelled from automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian troops shelled Ukrainian forces at Stanytsia Luhanska from automatic grenade launchers, while Ukrainian troops at Novooleksandrivka received heavy machine gun fire.^[495]

4 June

The Ukrainian Military recorded 49 rebel attacks in the previous 24 hours.^[496] They also recorded five Ukrainian soldiers wounded in action and two rebel fighters killed.^[497][498] Ukrainian positions around Mariupol were attacked by the separatists 31 times.^[496] There were rebel attacks involving machine guns and grenade launchers near Zaitseve and Luhanske, north of Horlivka, and Stanitsya Luhansk, in the northern section of the demarcation line. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles shelled Ukrainian redoubts near Novohryhorivka.^[496] It was reported that a civilian was killed by artillery fire at Pervomaisk the previous night.^[499] Pro-Russian officials reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 512 occasions. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The targets were Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Zhabicheve, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Trudovske, Staromykhailivka, Olenivka, Sakhanka, Oktyabr, Hryhorivka, Novomariivka, and Donetsk airport.^[500]

The Ukrainian military said that rebel troops opened fire on their positions 22 times throughout the day. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mmmortar volleys landed in Shyrokyne, Berezove and Pavlopil. Near Vodyane, Ukrainian troops were harassed with small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire and grenade launchers. Ukrainian positions at Shyrokyne and Hnutove received small arms fire. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, rebel forces opened fire from heavy machine guns and rocket launchers on the Ukrainian strongholds of Avdiivka and Pisky. Pro-Russian BPM-2 armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Opytne, supported by ZU-23-2 antiaircraft artillery and rocket propelled grenades. Hostile sniper activity was reported at Krasnohorivka.^[501]

5 June

The Ukrainian military recorded 44 attacks on their troops over the past 24 hours.^[502][503] Ukrainian forces reported seven wounded in the previous 24 hours.^[504] Fighting occurred near Avdiivka and Pisky, and rebels fired at Ukrainian troops near Marinka, Shyrokine, and Hnutove. There was sniper fire in Krasnohorivka. It was reported that rebels shelled Mykolaivka from Dokuchaievsk.^[504] Eduard Basurin stated that a rebel soldier was killed and another one was injured on the previous day due to Ukrainian shelling.^[505] Separatist sources recorded 485 attacks on their troops on the last 24 hours. The Ukrainian army used small arms, grende launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. The Ukrainian opened fire on Sakhanka, Staromykhailivka, Spartak, Trudovske, Yasinuvata, Vesele, Yakovlivka, Dokuchaievsk, Zaitseve and Donetsk airport.^[506]

The Ukrainian army reported 12 violations of the ceasefire by separatist troops throughout the day. In the area west of Donetsk city, the strongholds of Avdiivka and Pisky were pounded with 82 mm mortar fire. Pro-Russian tanks fired upon Ukrainian positions at Krasnohorivka, which were also the target of 120 mm mortar rounds. North of Horlivka, the rebels opened up with small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers on Ukrainian troops at Maiorsk and Mironovskiy. Separatist forces fired 122 mm self-propelled artillery at Ukrainian redoubts near Novozvanivka, in the northern front.^[507]

6 June

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 35 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 5 June.^{[508][509][510]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and seven others wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[511] Donetsk People's Republic deputy minister of defence, Eduard Basurin, said that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 593 occasions over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled guns. The targets were rebel positions at Zaitseve Yasinuvata, Kruta Balka, Zhabunki, Spartak, Staromykhailivka, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Oktyabr, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[512]

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 32 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 6 June.^{[514][515][516]} One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and nine others wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[517] Separatists sources recorded 654 Ukrainian attacks on their positions. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks to pound rebel troops at Zaitseve, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Shyroka Balka, Dokuchaievsk, Oleksandrivka, Olenivka, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Horlivka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. One rebel soldier was killed and two others wounded in action.^[518]

The Ukrainian military recorded 15 attacks on their positions by 06:00 pm. West of Donetsk city, pro-Russian forces shelled Butivka mining complex with 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The stronghold of Avdiivka was hit by small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars. Ukrainian troops at Maryinka were also harassed with automatic fire. North of Horlivka, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Zaitseve and Maiorsk. In the region of Mariupol, Shyrokyne and Novotroitske were the target of small arms and mortar fire. Ukrainian troops at Stepne, in the northern section of the demarcation line, received small arms fire and antitank guided missiles.^[519][520]

8 June

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 36 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 7 June.^{[521][522][523]} Seven Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[524] Pro-Russian authorities reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their troops on 355 occasions. The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack rebel positions at Spartak, Krasny Partizan, Vesele, Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Oleksandrivka, Sakhanka, Zaitseve, Petrovske, Nikolaevka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. A separatist soldier was killed.^[525]

The Ukrainian military recorded 15 attacks on their positions throughout the day. In the region of Mariupol, heavy shelling was reported at Novotroitske, which was the target of 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Ukrainian positions at Pavlopil were hit by 82 mm mortar fire. Around Donetsk city, mortar barrages also struck Avdiivka and Butivka mining complex. Sniper activity was reported at Maryinka and Avdiivka, while Putilivka coal mine was shelled with 122 mm self-propelled guns. In the area of Horlivka, Ukrainian troops at Leninske received sniper fire.^[526][527]

9 June

The Ukrainian army employed most of the weapons in their inventory, such as small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The targets were pro-Russian positions at Zaitseve, Ozeryanivka, Maiorsk, Yakovlivka, Dokuchaievsk, Donetsk airport, Petrovsky, Kiev and Kuybishev districts.^[532]

The Ukrainian military recorded 20 attacks on their positions by 06:00 pm. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Marinka and Krasnohorivka, supported by antitank rockets and mortar fire. According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 46 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 9 June,^{[535][536][537]} and on 18 occasions during the first 6 hours of 10 June.^[538] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region over the past 24 hours.^[538] Separatist authorities announced the death of four soldiers and one civilian in the course of the past week.^[539]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that 26 attacks against Ukrainian positions had taken place by 06:00 pm. Pro-Russian forces shelled Ukrainian positions along the demarcation line with 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were the Ukrainian strongholds of Avdiivka, Krasnohorivka, Pisky, Neveleske and Toretske, all of them around Donetsk city, and Novotritske, in the northern part of Mariupol region. Maryinka, west of Donetsk, Talkivka, east of Mariupol, Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka, in the northern front, were the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and automatic grenade launchers. Sniper activity was also reported at Maryinka.^[540][541] Members of the pro-Russian battalion "Patriot" claimed the destruction of a Ukrainian BMP-2 near Pisky after being hit by a SPG-9 recoilless gun.^[542]

11 June

The spokesman of the ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 46 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 10 June.^{[543][544][545]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and ten others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 10 June.^[546] Lysenko added that on 9 June one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and seven others wounded when a truck they were riding on hit a mine.^[546] Pro-Russian officials denounced 671 attacks on their troops over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Horlivka, Spartak, Zhabicheve, Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Zheleznaya Balka, Petrovsky and Kuibyshev districts and Donetsk airport.^[547]

The targets were Horlivka, Zaitseve, Holma, Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Yefimivka, Staromyhailivka, Spartak, Makiivka, Zhabicheve, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. Two pro-Russian soldiers were killed in action.^[555]

13 June

The spokesman of the ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 40 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 12 June. Mortar volleys landed in Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city, and Leninske and Novhorodske, around Horlivka. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Novhorodske, Luhanske and Troitske, supported by ZU-23-2 antiaircraft cannons.^{[559][560][561]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 12 June.^[562] Pro-Russian officials claimed that Ukrainian forces opened fire on 411 occasions on their positions. The Ukrainian army targeted rebel positions at Zaitseve, Kominternove, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Staromyhailivka, Horlivka, Shyroka Balka, Dokuchaievsk, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. One separatist soldier was killed in action.^[563] The Ukrainian military employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm self-propelled artillery and 152 mm howitzers.^[564]

The fighting involved the use of heavy weapons banned by the Minsk agreements. Pro-Russian tanks launched two assaults on Ukrainian redoubts at Krasnohorivka, both of them beaten off by the Ukrainian defenders. Nevelske, Pisky, Avdiivka, Verkhnyotoretske, Butivka and in the region of Horlivka, Luhanske, were the target of 152 mm howitzers. The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that rebel troops had launched 11 attacks against Ukrainian positions by 06:00 pm. In the region of Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles shelled the Ukrainian stronghold of Luhanske, supported by mortar fire. Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg, who was speaking in Brussels, said that adherence to the Minsk accords is the only way to end the fighting in eastern Ukraine, which has killed more than 9,300 people since 2014.^[582]

The Ukrainian army pounded pro-Russian redoubts at Zaitseve, Yasinuvata, Vesele, Dokuchaievsk, Krasnohorivka, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Sosnovske, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[587]

The spokesman of the ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 46 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 16 June.^{[591][592][593]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and five others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 16 June.^[594][595] Pro-Russian sources reported three rebel soldiers killed in action and six civilians wounded throughout the last week.^[596]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had launched five attacks against Ukrainian positions by 06:00 pm. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar barrages landed around Ukrainian outposts near Pavlopil, while recoilless antitank guns opened fire on the Ukrainian stronghold of Vodyane. The spokesman of the ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire 44 times on Ukrainian positions on 18 June. Ukrainian forces returned fire on several occasions. Pro-Russian tanks shelled the Ukrainian stronghold of Krasnohorivka twice, supported by 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Nevelske was also the target of 120 mm mortar volleys.^{[605][606][607]} At noon it was reported that three Ukrainain soldiers were killed and one was wounded on 18 June.^[608][609] Separatist sources said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on rebel troops on 300 occasions. The Ukrainian army used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled artillery to strike pro-Russian positions at Zheleznaya Balka, Zaitseve, Yasinuvata, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[610]

At 06:00 pm the Ukrainian military reported that 16 attacks on their positions had taken place throughout the day. Nine incidents took place in the areas of Donetsk city and Horlivka, five in Luhansk Oblast and two around Mariupol. North of Horlivka, pro-Russian forces fired at Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske and Maiorsk with small arms, rocket launchers and mortars. West of Donetsk city, Maryinka was the target of automatic grenade launchers.^[611][612]

On 15 June Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Stepan Poltorak informed NATO that Ukraine had suffered 623 battle deaths in its war with Russia in 2016.^[621]

21 June

The Ukrainian military reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 50 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 23 June.^{[643][644][645]} At noon it was reported that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action the previous day.^[646][647] One policeman died and four others were injured in a car crash near Lysychansk, Luhansk region.^[646][647] Pro-Russian sources reported two soldiers killed and three wounded in action throughout the week. One civilian was also injured.^[648]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that 24 attacks on their positions had taken place throughout the day. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Vodyane and Novotroitske, in the region of Mariupol. The nearby villages of Taramchuk and Chermalik were shelled from 82 mm mortars. Around Donetsk city, Ukrainian troops at Avdiivka and Opytne were harassed with small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades, while 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Krasnohorivka. Rebel forces shelled Pisky with 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Zaitseve, north of Horlivka, was the target of 82 mm mortar fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, the separatists fired small arms, automatic grenade launchers and mortars at Ukrainian outposts near Popasna and Novozvanivka. 25 June

The spokesman of the ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 61 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 24 June.^{[651][652][653]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region the previous day.^[654] Separatist sources reported 482 attacks on their positions. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian army opened fire on pro-Russian troops at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Staromykhailivka, Dokuchaievsk, Leninske, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Zaichenko, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[655]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ recorded in the evening that 26 attacks on their positions had taken place throughout the day. The main flashpoint was the region around Horlivka, were pro-Russian forces shelled the Ukrainian strongholds of Zaitseve, Maiorsk, Leninske and Kirove from automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Ukrainian troops at Maryinka, west of Donetsk city, were harassed with automatic fire. Around Mariupol, intense heavy machine gun fire was reported at Shyrokyne and Novotroitske. The Ukrainian army fired back.^[656][657]

26 June

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 55 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 25 June; the fire was returned on several occasions.^{[658][659][660]} A checkpoint manned by the Ukrainian Border Service at Stanytsia Luhanska was temporarily closed after been hit by small arms fire and GP-25 under-barrell grenade launchers fired from Mount Knyaz Igor.^[661] Three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 25 June.^[662] Donetsk Pepople's Republic deputy minister of defence, Eduard Basurin, reported 561 Ukrainian attacks on rebel positions over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian army used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The main targets were Zaitseve, Horlivka, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Staromykhailivka, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. Two children were killed in Kominternove and other two civilians were injured in Horlivka as a result of Ukrainian shelling.^[663]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that 11 attacks on their positions had taken place throughout the day. For almost an hour 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Troitske, in the surroundings of Donetsk city. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Maryinka. In the region of Horlivka, rebel forces fired automatic grenade launchers at Ukrainian troops in Zaitseve and Novhorodske, while Novoselivka became the target of 120 mm mortars. North of Mariupol, the separatists used small arms to harass Ukrainian forces at Hranitne and Novotroitske. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, 82 mm mortar fire was reported at Novozvanivka.^[664][665]

27 June

The spokesman of the ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 36 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day.^{[666][667][668]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and four others were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 26 June.^[669][670] Pro-Russian sources said that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 400 occasions. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian army targeted pro-Russian forces at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Vasilivka, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Staromyhailivka, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Zhabicheve, Shyroka Balka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[671]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that 21 attacks on their positions had taken place throughout the day, mainly near the city of Mariupol, where 15 attacks were recorded. Shyrokyne was attacked seven times with small arms, heavy machine guns, antitank rocket launchers and mortars. Pro-Russian forces pounded Ukrainian redoubts at Vodyane and Novotroitske with rocket propelled grenades. Around Donetsk city, 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Avdiivka and sniper fire was reported at Maryinka. North of Horlivka, Zaitseve and Maiorsk were the target of automatic grenade launchers. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian troops at Sokolniki were harassed with small arms fire.^[672][673]

28 June

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 71 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 27 June.^{[674][675][676]} One Ukrainian serviceman was killed and six others were wounded in action in the Donbass region the previous day.^[677] Pro-Russian officials claimed that the Ukrainian army opened fire on their positions on 734 occasions. The Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were Zaitseve, Vasilivka, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Staromyhailivka, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Shyroka Balka, Petrovsky district, Kuybishev district and Donetsk airport. According to these sources, two separatist sappers were killed and eight captured by Ukrainian troops while clearing minefields on the buffer zone.^[678]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that 19 attacks on their positions had taken place throughout the day; no ceasefire violations were registered in Luhansk Oblast. In the surroundings of Donetsk city, pro-Russian troops fired heavy machine guns and antitank recoilless guns at Ukrainian redoubts in Avdiivka and Pisky, while 120 mm mortar barrages landed in Krasnohorivka. Ukrainian troops at Novhorodske were the target of small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. North of Horlivka, heavy machine guns and antitank recoilles guns were fired at Luhanske. The same kind of weapons were used to pound Berezove, in the region of Mariupol. The rebels harassed Ukrainian outposts at nearby Starohnativka with small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades.^[679][680]

29 June

The spokesman of the ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 51 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 28 June.^{[681][682][683][684]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region the previous day.^[685] Pro-Russian authorities reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 830 occasions on their troops. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The targets were rebel positions at Ozeryanivka, Zaitseve, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Staromykhailivka, Dokuchaievsk, Zaichenko, Kominternove, Leninske, Sakhanka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport. Three civilians were wounded at Dokuchaievsk and Petrovsky.^[686]

Pro-Russian tanks and armoured fighting vehicles attacked the Ukrainian stronghold of Luhanske, in the region of Horlivka, supported by mortar fire and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Nearby Novoselivka was the target of 120 mm mortar volleys. In the region of Mariupol, rebel forces fired small arms and rocket launchers at Ukrainian troops in Novotroitske, Shyrokyne, Starohnativka and Talakivka. Novotroitske was also shelled from 120 mm mortars, as well as Berezove. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, 120 mm mortar rounds landed in Troitske. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, the separatist fired small arms and automatic grenade launchers at the Ukrainian garrisons in Novooleksandrivka and Stari Aidar. Ukrainian soldiers returned fire on several occasions.^[687][688]

Ukrainian regular troops and volunteers from the "Right Sector" claimed that a Pro-Russian armoured column broke through the demarcation line in the area of Svetlodarsk dam, supported by artillery fire. The rebels were driven back by two Ukrainian regular battalions and a "Right Sector" volunteer battalion and pushed 1.5 km behind the demarcation line. One separatist outpost was destroyed, and at least 12 Ukrainian servicemen were wounded, The fighting continued throughout the evening.^{[689][690][691]}

The Trilateral Contact Group in Minsk agreed on separating forces in Zolote and Petrovske.^[692]

30 June

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the ATO HQ in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 66 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 29 June.^{[693][694][695]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and eleven others were wounded in action in the Donbass region the previous day.^[696] One Ukrainian volunteer, Ukrainian baritone opera singer Vasyl Slipak was killed by a sniper's bullet in Luhanske at around 06:00 am.^{[697][698][696]} Separatist sources said that Ukrainian troops opened up on their positions on 326 occasions. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian forces targeted Zaitseve, Spartak, Yasinuvata, Dokuchaievsk, Tavricheske, Sakhanka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport.^[699]

Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles also attacked Ukrainian redoubts at Novhorodske, in the eastern part of Horlivka. In Luhansk Oblast, in the northern section of the demarcation line, Krimsky, Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka were shelled from 82 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian troops at Novohryhorivka and Starohnativka. ^[700][701]
