Rennes Métropole is the intercommunal structure gathering the commune of Rennes in France and some of its suburbs. It was created on January 1, 2015, succeeding the agglomeration community of Rennes, which had itself succeeded in 2000 to previous district created in 1970 with less powers than the current métropole.
The goal of the Metropole (intercommunal structure for the largest French towns like Lille, Lyon, Bordeaux or Strasbourg) is to build a better metropolitan area by synchronizing the transport system, environmental actions, urbanization, economic and social development, culture, university research, etc.
In 2012, Rennes Metropole has 420 000 inhabitants.
