Pokémon Uranium is a fan-made game based on the Pokémon series.[1][2][3][4][5][6] The game was in development for nine years.[7][8][9] The game adds 150 new fan-made species of Pokémon, along with a new region.[10] Similar to the official games, Uranium contains both online trading and online battling.[7] In August 2016, after one and a half million downloads, the download links for Pokémon Uranium were taken down from the official website because the developers wanted to "respect Nintendo's wishes", after receiving multiple DMCA takedown notice letters from lawyers representing Nintendo.[11][12][13] The following month, the developers announced that they had officially ceased development of the title.[14]

Gameplay and plot

In Pokémon Uranium, the player takes the role of a young hero who is taken care of by their aunt due to the disappearance of their mother after a nuclear explosion. As she is unable to take care of the hero anymore, they leave home after receiving a Pokémon from professor B'ambo, and navigates the Tandor region on their quest to battle eight Pokémon gyms and the Pokémon league to become the Pokémon champion.

Online connections to other copies of a Pokémon game is a returning aspect of previous games to Pokémon Uranium. Global Trade Station, also known as GTS, also exists in the game. It allowed players to anonymously trade Pokémon with anyone.[15][16]

Reception

The game was nominated for The Game Awards 2016 in the "Best Fan Creation" category, but was removed from the nomination page without notice alongside the Metroid fan game AM2R; Alissa McAloon of Gamasutra speculated that it was due to Nintendo's stance on unauthorized use of their intellectual properties.[17]
