- The novel 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Arthur C. Clarke
- The 1983 manga Riki-Oh takes place in 2001.
- The fifth part of the manga JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Vento Aureo, takes place in Italy in 2001.
Film and television
- Max Keeble's Big Move (2001) is set between September 3–7, 2001.
- In Neon Genesis Evangelion, the three Eva pilots Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu are born.
- In The Flash episode "Fast Forward", Barry Allen / The Flash (John Wesley Shipp) is accidentally sent ten years forward in time to March 3, 2001.

- Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) starts out in 2001.
- Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991), based on the aforementioned manga (see Literature above).

- World Trade Center (2006) and United 93 (2006) both depict the September 11 attacks.
- The 9/11 Commission Report (2006), an Asylum film, is based on the eponymous report on the attacks of September 11, 2001.

- Tiger Cruise takes place on September 11, 2001.
Computer and video games
- In Earthbound, known as Mother 2 in Japan (1995), a woman who lends a town map to Ness, the protagonist, tells him to "come back in the year 2001 to return it". The game is set in the year "199X".
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear (1999): Set in 2001.
- Grand Theft Auto III is set in October 2001.
- Conker's Bad Fur Day is set in March 2001.
- Urban Strike (1994), set in an alternate/fictional 2001 timeline, when it foreshadows a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center's Twin Towers (which, rather eerily, means it correctly predicted the 9/11 terrorist attacks).
- The first 3 Muv Luv visual novels, "Extra", "Unlimited", and "Alternative", take place in the later half of this year. (2003, 2006)
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: The DL-6 incident is set on December 28, 2001, as defense attorney Gregory Edgeworth (Miles' father) was murdered under strange circumstances inside an elevator. Yanni Yogi was the suspected murder, but his lawyer alleged temporary insanity and Yogi was declared not guilty.
