Kukës County (Albanian: Qarku i Kukësit) is one of the 12 counties of Albania. The population at the 2011 census was 85,292, in an area of 2374 km².^[1] Its capital is the city Kukës.

Geography

To the east, Kukës borders Kosovo^[a], while in the extreme northwest it borders Montenegro. Domestically, it borders the following counties:

Dibër: south
Lezhë: southwest
Shkodër: west

Administrative divisions

Until 2000, Kukës County was subdivided into three districts: Has, Kukës, and Tropojë. Since the 2015 local government reform, the county consists of the following 3 municipalities: Has, Kukës and Tropojë.^[2] Before 2015, it consisted of the following 27 municipalities:

Demographics

According to the last national census from 2011 this county has 85,292 inhabitants. They are Muslim and Catholic Christians and speak Gheg dialect.

^ Kosovo is the subject of a territorial dispute between the Republic of Kosovo and the Republic of Serbia.
