Gateway is a census designated place (CDP) in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,943 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is located just north of Southwest Florida International Airport.

Geography

Gateway is located at 26°34′29″N 81°45′16″W / 26.57472°N 81.75444°W / 26.57472; -81.75444 (26.574686, -81.754532).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.7 square miles (23 km2), of which 8.6 square miles (22 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) (1.72%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,943 people, 1,114 households, and 952 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 344.2 people per square mile (132.9/km²). There were 1,322 housing units at an average density of 154.6/sq mi (59.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.6% White, 2.1% Black, 0.14% Native American, 1.53% Asian, 0.78% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.26% of the population.

There were 1,514 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 80.6% were married couples living together, 3.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.5% were non-families. 11.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 2.7% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $78,705, and the median income for a family was $79,736. Males had a median income of $60,054 versus $42,083 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $38,986. About .6% of families and 0.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under age 18 and 4.6% of those age 65 or over.
