David A. Permut (born March 23, 1954) is an American television and movie producer.[2] In 1979 he was the producer of Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (the first theatrical live comedy concert), and Dragnet (1987), an early example of remaking a television series into a motion picture.[3] He is owner and president of Permut Presentations, Inc. of Los Angeles. Since 1999 he has maintained a second home in Palm Springs, California.[4]
Feature film work
Permut's credits include The Marrying Man (1991) written by Neil Simon,[2] Captain Ron (1992) starring Kurt Russell, Eddie (1996) starring Whoopi Goldberg, Double Take (2001) starring Orlando Jones and Eddie Griffin, and Dysfunktional Family (2003) also starring Griffin. In addition, Permut conceived the idea behind the hit comedy spoof Farce of the Penguins (2006) with writer and director Bob Saget. Other credits from Permut include Charlie Bartlett starring Robert Downey Jr. and Anton Yelchin, Blind Date directed by Blake Edwards and starring Kim Basinger and Bruce Willis in his big-screen debut, and Face/Off starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.
Permut produced Youth in Revolt (2009) with Dimension Films; the film stars Michael Cera (Superbad, Juno) along with a cast that includes Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Jean Smart, Justin Long, Fred Willard, Mary Kay Place and M. Emmet Walsh. Youth in Revolt is based on the classic cult-novel by C.D. Payne.
Released by Disney in 2009 was the documentary The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story, which Permut produced with Ben Stiller and his company Red Hour Films.
In 2012 Permut produced the film "Struck By Lightning", which is written by and starring Chris Colfer (Glee). The movie, directed by Brian Dannelly (Saved), will showcase Sarah Hyland (Modern Family), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Dermot Mulroney, Allison Janney, Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids) and Allie Grant (Weeds).
In 2013 Permut produced the film 'Match starring Patrick Stewart, Carla Gugino and Matthew Lillard which premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and was released through IFC.
In 2014, Permut produced "And Punching the Clown" written by Henry Phillips and Gregori Viens. The film directed by Viens, stars Henry Phillips long with J.K. Simmons, Sarah Silverman, Tig Notaro, Jim Jefferies and Mike Judge among others. The film had its premiere at SXSW in 2016.
Permut also produced Mel Gibson's film Hacksaw Ridge. Starring Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving and Teresa Palmer. The film received a ten minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival and opened to critical acclaim on November 4th, 2016.
David Permut was nominiated for an AACTA Award for Best Film for "Hacksaw Ridge"
Permut is in post production on "The Polka King" starring Jack Black written and to be directed by Maya Forbes and Wally Wolodarsky.[5]
TV work
Permut's television production credits include Mistress (1987) for CBS, Love Leads the Way (1984) for ABC/Disney (1984), "A Triumph of the Heart: The Ricky Bell Story" and Breaking The Silence (1992), both for CBS.
Permut produced the critically acclaimed Prayers for Bobby (2009) starring Sigourney Weaver and directed by Russell Mulcahy for Lifetime Television Network. On July 16, 2009, Prayers for Bobby was nominated for two Emmys. Sigourney Weaver was nominated for the outstanding lead actress in a movie and the film itself was nominated for the outstanding best made-for-television movie.
Permut also produced The Color of Rain (2013) for Hallmark based on the New York Times Bestseller. The Color of Rain went on to premiere as[6] "the highest-rated and most-watched original film ever..." for Hallmark Movie Channel.
