Alongside Modern Family, Hyland is also known for her roles in the films Struck by Lightning (2012), Scary Movie 5 (2013), Vampire Academy (2014), and XOXO (2016).

Early life

Hyland was born in Manhattan, New York, the daughter of actors Melissa Canaday and Edward James Hyland. She is the sister of actor Ian Hyland.[1] She attended the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan.[2]

Career

Hyland has been acting since her first role as Howard Stern's daughter in the film Private Parts in 1997.[3] She went to portray such roles as Molly in the 1999 television remake of Annie, and Maddie Healy in Lipstick Jungle on NBC. Hyland is featured in an Olive Garden commercial along with actress Molly Culver, and has also appeared on Broadway as the young Jacqueline Bouvier in Grey Gardens.[4]

Since 2009, Hyland has played Haley Dunphy on the ABC sitcom Modern Family, for which she and the rest of the show's cast have won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series each year from 2011 through 2014.[5][6][7][8] In 2011, Hyland co-starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie Geek Charming.[9]

In 2012, Hyland appeared in the film Struck by Lightning.[10][11] In September 2012, it was announced that she would be part of a Nintendo 3DS ad campaign.[12] Dianna Agron and Gabby Douglas are part of the campaign as well.[13][14]

Personal life

In 2009, Hyland began dating actor Matt Prokop, whom she met while auditioning for High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Hyland and Prokop lived together from 2011[15] until 2014.[16] In September 2014, Hyland was granted a temporary restraining order against Prokop after he allegedly assaulted and threatened her.[17] As of February 2015, she is dating Vampire Academy co-star Dominic Sherwood.[18]

Hyland was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia as a young child. In April 2012, she received a kidney transplant, with her father as the donor.[19]
