Calvary Christian High School is a college preparatory high school in Clearwater, Florida, in the United States. This private Christian high school was opened in the fall of 2000 by Calvary Baptist Church. The year began with seven faculty members and 38 students in ninth and tenth grades. The following year the student body was made up of 80 students. Eighteen students were in the first graduating class in 2003. Today, there are nearly 400 students, with more than 100 students in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade classes.
Growth and Outreach
The school currently is growing. Calvary Baptist's "Vision for Life" campaign is working on accumulating nearly $3 million to build a new student center by 2015.
Moving East
During a winter recess in 2006, the school relocated to its current campus at the corner of McMullen Booth Road and Drew Street in Clearwater, FL.
Programs and Sports
Since the schools opening in fall of 2000 the school has grown to a large enough size to accommodate many sports and programs. Groups include the Calvary Film Society, Rho Kappa, Key Club, Environmental Club, National Honors Society, Student Government Association (SGA), and more. Students are also allowed to start prayer groups with administrative approval, or start a club at the school by finding a teacher willing to sponsor the group. In the sports department, the school offers football, cross country, track, soccer, basketball, girls volleyball, golf, tennis, and bowling teams. In the summer and fall of 2012 the school started its first marching band called the warrior band.
College Prep Classes
Today, students can take Dual-credit courses and Advanced Placement classes.
Sports
Calvary is an FHSAA affiliate in Class 3A. The team mascot is the Warrior (such as the Lady Warriors). There are 24 sports programs at Calvary.
Technology
In 2011, the school made the decision to use computers in the classroom environment. It has changed the way students learn dramatically, by allowing access to RenWeb, the school's online grade book and school resource portal. In 2012, the school introduced Moodle, an online classroom that allows teachers to post documents, collect homework paper-free, and assign tests in a safe and "cheat-free" secure system. The school is still learning, and fixing issues as they surface. Overall, however, the addition of computers has significantly improved the student's learning experience.
