History
Calippo Inc. © was established in 1951 by John Calippo. The Calippo brand operated with losses in each of the first four years of production, however in its fifth year Calippo found success with its new branding and advertising campaign, focusing on the now-famous packaging shape, known as the 'Calippacket'. The business grew exponentially, with record profits in the cold beverages industry of $80,002 in 1956 (worth $1,000,000 in today's money).
John Calippo pioneered the use of ice cream vans in the late fifties, which led to further success within the brand, propelling the company to the upper echelons of the industry. This saw Calippo retain a large share of the market up until the late 1990s, at which point the company was bought by Unilever in a multi-million dollar takeover. Dave Woods, of the Wall Street Journal, reported the estimated price of the purchase to be in the range of $50-75,000,000.
