Andrés Muschietti, also known as Andy Muschietti (1973), is an Argentine film director and screenwriter, known for directing the 2013 horror film Mama, based on his short of the same name.
Career
In 2013, Muschietti directed his debut film, a supernatural horror Mama, which he co-wrote with Neil Cross and his sister Barbara Muschietti.[1][2][3] It was based on Muschietti's three-minute short film Mamá, which attracted Guillermo del Toro, who stated that the film included the "scariest" scenes he had "ever seen." The short convinced del Toro to executive produce and make it into a feature-length film by teaming up with Muschietti.[4] The film was a directorial debut of Muschietti, which starred Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, and Isabelle Nelisse, and was released by Universal Pictures on January 18, 2013.[4][5] The film grossed over $146 million with just a budget of $15 million.[6]
In February 2013, Universal Pictures set Muschietti to direct the film adaptation of Josh Malerman's novel Bird Box, which Scott Stuber, Chris Morgan and Barbara would produce, while Eric Heisserer was set to write the script.[7][8] In September 2013, Universal hired Muschietti for another project, The Mummy reboot of the franchise, but in May 2014, Muschietti left the project due to creative differences based on the Jon Spaihts' latest draft of the script.[9][10]
In January 2014, Muschietti was reportedly among the front-runners to direct a He-Man film for Warner Bros., a remake of Masters of the Universe.[11] In June 2014, Deadline reported that Muschietti was on the shortlist of directors to direct a sequel to the Universal's fantasy film Snow White and the Huntsman.[12] In September 2014, Sony Pictures set Muschietti to direct the film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus after Josh Trank left due of his commitment to one of the upcoming Star Wars spin-off movies. Barbara would produce the film along with Kevin Misher through his Misher Films, while Seth Lochhead was set to write the screenplay.[13]
In February 2015, Deadline reported that Warner Bros. was looking to hire Muschietti to take the director's duty of the live-action adaptation of franchise Robotech, which Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton were attached to produce, while Michael B. Gordon was set to write the script.[14] In March 2015, Plan B Entertainment optioned the film rights to the Stephen King's short story The Jaunt in the Skeleton Crew collection, Muschietti was set to direct the film while Barbara was also attached as producer.[15] In July 2015, after leaving Cary Fukunaga, Muschietti was hired by New Line Cinema to direct It, an adaptation of Stephen King's novel of same name, which Barbara would produce along with Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg.[16] The film would still be made into the two parts and the studio was in search of a new writer to meet Muschietti's creative vision.[16]
Personal life
Argentine director Muschietti's sister Barbara Muschietti is also a film writer and producer.[17]
