The school has approximately 1000 students between the ages of 11 and 18, and 80 members of staff.
The school was awarded Humanities College status in 2006. Helen Yarrow was appointed the Head of Humanities.
In 2010, headteacher Alan Key retired. The previous deputy head Carol Kitson took over as headteacher.
In 2010, vertical tutoring was also introduced to the school using a house system names after local abbeys (Bolton, Easby, Fountains, Rievaulx, Selby and Whitby) each with 8 or 9 groups coded with the initial of their abbey and a number each containing approximately 25 students.
