The 1998–99 NBA season was the Kings' 50th season in the NBA and 14th in Sacramento.^[1] During the offseason, the Kings acquired All-Star forward Chris Webber from the Washington Wizards while signing free agents Vlade Divac, Scot Pollard and Jon Barry. With the acquisition of Webber along with Divac, Pollard, Barry and top draft pick Jason Williams, the Kings improved under new head coach Rick Adelman as they finished third in the Pacific Division with a 27–23 record, their first winning season in 16 years. In the first round of the playoffs, the Kings got off to a good start, taking a 2–1 lead over 3rd–seeded Utah Jazz. However, the Jazz won Game 4 by one point to even the series and force a decisive fifth game. The Kings would lose Game 5 in overtime 99–92. Following the season, Tariq Abdul-Wahad was traded to the Orlando Magic, and Vernon Maxwell signed as a free agent with the Seattle SuperSonics.
