1991–92 S.S. Lazio season
S.S. Lazio had a largely disappointing season, when its investments in foreign star players did not take off any better than a mediocre tenth place in the league. It had secured an agreement with Tottenham to sign English superstar Paul Gascoigne, but he ruled himself out of play for a full year, with a cruciate ligament injury in the 1991 FA Cup Final. With Gascoigne rehabilitating back in London, eventually arriving at Lazio in the summer of 1992, the team endured a season where it was rather average, but at least the striking partnership of Rubén Sosa and Karl-Heinz Riedle kept Lazio well clear of the bottom regions of the table. However, Sosa was bought by Inter in the summer of 1992, and Lazio had to look out for a replacement. They found Giuseppe Signori at Foggia, and Signori's goals propelled the club into title contention in years to come.
