The Škoda Kodiaq is a SUV manufactured by the Czech automaker Škoda Auto.[1] The vehicle is based on VW Group's modular MQB platform, shared with a new generation of Volkswagen Tiguan and the SEAT Ateca, however the Kodiaq is longer than Tiguan and comes in a seven-seat version. The estimated selling price on the European market will start from 24,520 euros.[2] The Kodiaq will have the ambition to compete with premium rivals such as the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, so a richer standard equipment than usual for Škoda is expected. It will, for example, include a head-up display and a digital instrument panel.[3] It could also be the first Škoda with hybrid electric power.
The Kodiaq[4] shall mainly focus on Asian countries, especially on China. It is expected, that in European markets the Škoda Yeti will dominate, while the Kodiaq will be the top seller in Asian markets. For these reasons there is speculation about where the vehicle will be produced. Possibilities are, except for Kvasiny, also assembly in Bratislava or in Russia. Earlier it was assumed that the new SUV would be called "Snowman" or "Polar", but this has been rejected by the former head of Škoda (Vahland) as a media speculation. On 23 December 2015, Škoda registered the name "Kodiaq", the name refers to the largest brown bear, the Kodiak bear.[5][6]
The Kodiaq is the first vehicle in the Škoda lineup to have Area View, Tow Assist, Manoeuvre Assist and Predictive Pedestrian Protection.[7] It is also the first vehicle in the VAG MQB platform lineup to feature capacitive shortcut buttons instead of the physical buttons for the 8" infotainment systems.
The Škoda Kodiaq is available with a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 litres, and a choice of front- or all-wheel-drive.
In February 2016, images of the Vision S concept were released,[8] and the concept model appeared in March 2016 at the Geneva Motor Show.[9][10] The final SUV was introduced at the Paris Motor Show on 29 September 2016.[11][12] The first cars will be delivered to customers in February 2017.
In November 2016, Škoda Kodiaq was named the Best Family Car in the World by TopGear Magazine.[13]
