Zopo Mobile[1] (or simply, Zopo) is the commonly used name of Shenzhen Zopo Communications-equipment Limited Company, a Mobile Smartphone maker in China, headquartered in Shenzhen, China. Zopo was founded in 2012 (formally established in 2008) by Mr. Kevin Xu, present CEO. It engages in research and development, production, marketing and service of mobile intelligent terminal products. ZOPO is an acronym standing for "Zealous Open Perfect Outstanding".[2]

Zopo Mobile is the first company to manufacture and deliver to China and India markets a smartphone with Linux Sailfish OS,[3] the operating system licensed from its Finnish developer Jolla.

Recently, Zopo signed MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo as brand ambassador.[4] A special edition smartphone dedicated to the Spaniard athlete has been released in October 2015, the Speed 7 GP.[5]

History

Zopo has been a pioneer on more than one occasion. In 2012 Zopo released the Zopo ZP200 model, which was "China's first Glasses-Free 3D dual sim smart mobile phone". It sold many units in mainland China, mostly.[6]

In late 2013, Zopo released the world's first true octa-core CPU based smartphone, with the ZP998. The ZP998 was the first smartphone sold using the new (at the time) MediaTek MT6592 SoC.[7]

Zopo was the first company to manufacture and deliver a Linux Sailfish OS smartphone to the Indian market.[8]

As of June 2015, Zopo has opened experience stores in France, Hong Kong, Italy, Jordan, Netherlands, Tunisia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Spain.

Beginning of 2015, Zopo integrated PowerXtend in the newly launched ZP999. This is a de facto standard mobile power management from LucidLogic.[9]

In April 2015, Zopo announced it would open a European Operation Center mid-2015, in the Netherlands.[10]

In May 2015, the company announced it would classify its products into three categories: Speed high end products,[11] Flash focused on design and quality of pictures,[12] and Color for budget phones mostly targeting young users.[13]

With its ongoing development, Zopo has reached several different markets, officially and through local distributors. Spain is one of the strongest markets for Zopo, but the company also recently launched operations in India in August 2015,[14] and in Laos in September 2015.[15]

In October 2015 Zopo released the source code of the Speed 7 to the public.[16][17]

The Speed series currently includes the Speed 7 GP,[18] Speed 7,[19] Speed 7 Plus,[20] Speed 7 C,[21] and Speed 8[22] smartphones, being that both the Speed 7 and Speed 7 Plus were released in September 2015.[23] The main differences between both the Speed 7 and Speed 7 Plus are its size and battery capacity. The Speed 7 has a 5.0 inch Full-HD IPS display, and a 2500mAh li-polymer battery, while the Speed 7 Plus has a 5.5 inch Full-HD IPS display and a 3000mAh li-polymer battery. The two devices have a Mediatek Octa-Core 64-bit CPU, 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage space (microSD slot available to expand up to 64GB), a rear 13.2MP camera and a front 5.0MP camera. Android 5.1 Lollipop OS run in the machines, but an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS has been announced.[24] The Speed 7 C was released in February 2016[25] has a 5.0" HD IPS display with a 13.2MP main rear camera and 5.0MP front one. A 64-bit Quad-Core CPU plus 2GB of RAM inside, powered by a 2500mHa Li-polymer battery and 16GB of internal storage space. The Speed 7C comes out of the box with Android 5.1 OS, and supports dual SIM.

The Speed 7 GP Jorge Lorenzo Edition is a special edition smartphone dedicated to Zopo's brand ambassador and three-time MotoGP World Champion, Jorge Lorenzo. Technically the device is similar to the Speed 7 Plus, but it has Jorge Lorenzo's racing logo in the back, as well as his signature. The phone also comes packed in a premium box with specially designed accessories.[26] It has been made available in early November, 2015.

The Speed 8 was officially unveiled on February 24, at the Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona, Spain.[27] Being powered by MediaTek's new Helio X20 SoC, the Speed 8 became the first deca-core in the world officially displayed to the public.[28] The unveiling of the new smartphone happened with brand ambassador and MotoGP Champion Jorge Lorenzo hosting the presentation and revealing the final release date and price: April 2016, $299.99.

With the Helio X20 at its core, the Speed 8 also comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage space, and a 3600mAh battery with fast charging. Placed in the back of the Speed 8 is a 21MP camera coupled with a SONY IMX230 Sensor and dual LED Flash. Up front is a 8MP front camera with its own LED Flash. Making it all come together is Google's Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, always present and manifesting itself in the Full-HD IPS 5.5" display. Other features include NFC - near field communications -, USB Type-C, Dual SIM compatibility, fingerprint scanner placed in the back of the device for increased security and 4G LTE support.

The Flash series represents Zopo's mid-range smartphones, targeting a more urban-influenced demographic. The series includes 3 devices. The Flash S[29] is a 5.2 inch machine with FHD IPS Retina display, Octa-Core 64-bit CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and Android 5.1 OS. 13.2MP rear camera and 8.0MP front camera.

The Flash C[30] sports a 2.5D cambered glass screen over a 5.0 inch HD IPS display, Quad-Core 64-bit CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and Android 5.1 OS. The cameras are a 8.0MP rear one, and a 5.0MP in the front.

The Flash E[31] has a 5.3 inch HD IPS display, Quad-Core 64-bit CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and Android 5.1 OS. 13.2MP in the rear camera and 5.0MP in the front camera.

Color Series[13]

The Color series represents the most budget priced smartphones from Zopo, and is targeted at young adults and teens demographics. The Color E[32] has a 5.0 inch HD IPS display, Quad-Core 64-bit CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of Storage and Android 5.1 OS. 8.0MP rear camera and 2.0MP front camera.

The Color C[33] has a 4.5 inch IPS display, Quad-Core 64-bit CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of Storage and Android 5.1 OS. 5.0MP rear camera and 2.0MP front camera.

In January 2015, the new Zopo Color S was released in two versions,[34] 5 and 5.5 inch models. The Color S[35] has a HD IPS display, a Quad-core MediaTek MT6735 64-bit CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, with an option to expand it up to 64GB with a microSD card. It is a dual SIM device compatible with 4G. An 8MP camera is present in the back of the phone, and a 2MP is placed at the front for selfies and video calls.The device has a 3000mAh li-poly battery.

Future Developments

Zopo has been hinting at several new devices to be released in the future.

Brand Ambassador - MotoGP Champion Jorge Lorenzo

Zopo established Spain as the main western market for the brand, and a strategic insertion point into the broader European market. Three-time MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo was chosen as brand ambassador for Zopo in July, 2015.[36] Being a superstar in his home country in Spain and an internationally recognized top athlete, the signing became one of the key achievements for Zopo's global brand awareness expansion.

Soon after the signing, Zopo started working on a limited edition custom made smartphone dedicated to Jorge Lorenzo. That device would become the Speed 7 GP, and was made available in early November 2015,[5] just some days after Jorge Lorenzo won the 2015 MotoGP season.[37]
