Zimmerberg Base Tunnel

The AlpTransit project (Gotthard Base Tunnel and Zimmerberg Base Tunnel) is the centerpiece of the Central European rail network.

Zimmerberg Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel in Switzerland. It is divided into two sections: I and II. Zimmerberg I is about 10 km long and links Zurich with Thalwil.

Zimmerberg Base Tunnel II work is suspended. Within the framework of the Rail 2030 project, the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel II in the variant for 21 billion Swiss francs is included again.[1] The construction is currently proposed.

Part II will bring the length to about 20 km and will link Zurich with Zug. The intermediate exit to Thalwil would still be used by passenger and freight trains going to Chur as well as international trains to Austria.
