Zaqy Mohamad (born 15 September 1974) is a Singaporean politician. A member of the Singapore-based People's Action Party (PAP), he serves as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency (GRC). He used to be MP for the Hong Kah Group Representation Constituency.
Early life and education
Zaqy Mohamad was born in Singapore on 15 September 1974. He studied at Saint Michael's School where he took his primary education, and subsequently Raffles Institution for his secondary education and Raffles Junior College (now Raffles Institution). He furthered his education by attending the Nanyang Technological University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Electronic and Electrical studies. He obtained a scholarship to study at the Paris-based ESIEE Management for a year. In 2003, he finished his year-long master's degree course in Financial Engineering at the Carnegie Mellon University.[1]
Career
A member of the People's Action Party, Zaqy was a member of parliament for the Hong Kah GRC from 2006 to 2011. In mid-2011, he moved to Choa Chu Kang GRC, where he has been MP since.[1] Zaqy is Chairman of the Ministry of Communications and Information. He is also a member of the Ministry of Manpower, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Finance.[1] On 21 November 2008, Zaqy, then an MP for Hong Kah GRC, officially re-opened the Choa Chu Kang Public Library.[2]
From 1999 to 2002, he was a senior consultant at Arthur Andersen. Thereafter, from 2002 to 2005, he served as a business consultant at IBM/PriceWaterhouseCoopers Consulting. From 2005 to 2008, he was the director of Solutions Avanade. Since 2008, Zaqy has worked as a sales director at Datacraft.[1]
Political career
At the 2015 general election, Zaqy again stood as a PAP Candidate in the Group Representation Constituency of Chua Chu Kang. Zaqy was elected to Parliament again when the four-member PAP team won the constituency (which was led by Health Minister Gan Kim Yong) with an increased majority and defeated the team from the People's Power Party by 84,850 votes (76.9%) to 25,475 (23.1%).
Personal life
A Muslim, Zaqy is married with three children. He resides in Singapore.[1]
