Zakir Rashid Bhat
Zakir Rashid Bhat is a new Hizbul Mujahideen commander in Kashmir. He was appointed the Commander after the death of former commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Burhan Muzaffar Wani, which lead the 2016 Kashmir Unrest. He issued his first video in Kashmir in August, 2016.[1][2][3][4] He belongs to the new breed of tech savvy, well educated militants who joined the armed struggle after 2010 kashmir unrest.[5]
Background
The Hizb had earlier named one Mehmood Ghaznavi as Wani’s successor but many believe it to be an alias of Bhat, who is said to be around 22 years age.Zakir Rashid Bhat was born in Noorpura, Tral area in south kashmir to Abdul Rashid Bhat,a senior engineer with state government.He was a student of civil engineering in Chandigarh before he returned to his ancestral village Noorpura in Pulwama[5] in 2013 for a vacation and joined the Hizbul Mujahideen, the only surviving Kashmir-based militant group.[6]
