William "Bill" Malcolm Williams (1927-2011) was a Canadian metallurgical engineer. Williams was an Emeritus Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at McGill University.[1]
Williams was born in Tonypandy, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales in 1927.[1] He won a scholarship to study at the University of Bristol, rejecting Cambridge because "he didn’t want to dress up for dinner".[1] In the early 1950s, he moved to North America, taking positions in Rome, Chicago and New York before getting to McGill.
Williams commenced lecturing at McGill University in 1960 where he taught for more than four decades until his 75th birthday in 2002.
Personal life
Williams married Toronto-born artist Esther Kilgour. They bought a house in Westmount, Quebec in the early 1960s and had three children.
Death
Williams died on January 27, 2011 from cancer and a brain tumor. His friends included former principal of McGill David Johnston, whose eloquent tribute to Williams’ life was read out at his memorial service.[1]
