William Fitzgibbon

William Fitzgibbon was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Carrigtwohill and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team for one season 1902.

Playing career

Club

Fitzgibbon played his club hurling with his local Carrigtwohill team in Cork. He enjoyed some success, however, he never won a county senior championship title.

Inter-county

Fitzgibbon first tasted success on the inter-county scene with Cork in 1902 when he was a late addition for the All-Ireland 'home' final against Dublin. That game ended in a draw, however, Cork trounced 'the Dubs' in the replay by 2-6 to 0-1 and booked their place in the All-Ireland final. London provided the opposition in that game. The final was played in Cork to mark the opening of the new Cork Athletic Ground. Fitzgibbon's side made no mistake on this occasion and powered to a 3-13 to 0-0 victory. It was a huge triumph for Cork and gave Fitzgibbon a coveted All-Ireland winners’ medal.^[1] It was his only appearance in an All-Ireland final.
