Welch (surname)
Welch is an English surname of Anglo-Saxon origin. It comes from the Old English word Welisc meaning foreign. It was used to describe those of Celtic or Welsh Origin. This surname has no ancestral link to Ireland, though contrary to popular belief, it is English. An American man with the surname Welch tested positive for DNA from Great Britain (89%) but had less than (1%) Irish DNA.[1] Welch is the usual form of the surname in England; the usual form in Ireland is Walsh, and in Scotland Welsh.[2]
