Venus Nicolino, known on television as Dr. V, is an American media personality[1] and doctor of clinical psychology who is notable for appearing in a reality television series from Bravo titled L.A. Shrinks.[2]

TV career

LA Shrinks features segments of Nicolino meeting with patients as well as information about her personal life. She has appeared on other television shows, including Real Housewives of New Jersey and Millionaire Matchmaker, and as a recurring guest on Watch What Happens Live, The Dr. Oz Show, and Rachael Ray. She has been a commentator for CNN.[1]

Nicolino is a proponent of balanced diets, exercise, and healthy eating.[3] She believes 20% of children in America are mis-diagnosed as having mental illness. Nicolino is an outspoken critic of the over-prescription of drugs, especially to children.[4]

The show's producers describe her as "sharp tongued with a mind to match"; they say she "serves up the sass" while being empathetic with her clients.[5] Critic Robert Lloyd in the Los Angeles Times wrote that the show felt "uncomfortably contrived", and that Nicolino appeared to be "auditioning here for a show of her own"; Lloyd criticized the show for over-emphasizing pop-culture topics such as sex.[1]
