UpCounsel is an online marketplace for legal services that enables users (primarily entrepreneurs and businesses) to find and hire attorneys via their site. The company, which is based in San Francisco, California, USA, was founded in 2012 and initially provided its service to users in California and New York.[1] UpCounsel has fully launched its service in California, New York, Illinois, Texas, Massachusetts and Colorado.
History
UpCounsel was founded in 2012 by attorney Matt Faustman and technologist Mason Blake to give startups and other small businesses access to legal help.[2]
UpCounsel initially raised $1.5 million in seed funding from Homebrew, Bobby Yazdani, SV Angel, Collaborative Fund, Haroon Mokhtarzada, and other angel investors. In December 2014, the company secured an additional $2.4 million in seed funding; the round was led by Metamorphic Ventures and Crosslink Capital.[3]
UpCounsel raised $10 million, led by Menlo Ventures, in July, 2015.
Services
On UpCounsel.com, users can search through attorneys by legal topic and location, and request to be matched with an attorney by posting a job. The site works to connect the two parties by identifying a client’s needs and finding an attorney with the right experience.[3] UpCounsel provides services in various legal areas including business formation, trademarks, patents, employment, copyrights, immigration and real estate.[4] Attorneys available for hire through the “Post a Job” feature have been vetted by UpCounsel.[5]
