University Settlement is a nonprofit social service agency serving the Broadway/Slavic Village neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio.[1] It is located at 4800 Broadway Ave. The agency's mission is to foster strong and independent individuals and families by providing innovative, valued, and collaborative services that meet the evolving needs of the Broadway/Slavic Village Community.

History

The agency was established by Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in 1926 as a way to help recently arriving Eastern European immigrants adjust to life in Cleveland. In the 1970s, the agency redirected its programming towards basic needs provision and services for youth and senior citizens.

Over the decades, the community’s needs changed as more Cleveland residents moved to the suburbs. Today, the majority of neighborhood residents are the working poor and the elderly. In response, University Settlement provides several programs targeting youth, senior citizens, and families.
