Ukiah Valley Medical Center is a 78-bed acute-care hospital in Ukiah, California serving 113,000 people in Mendocino and Lake Counties.
History
In 1956, a group of local investors began to construct a hospital in Ukiah. This 43-bed facility was licensed as a general acute care hospital. In 1966, the hospital transitioned from a proprietary hospital to a nonprofit organization.[1]
In the mid-1970s, the need for expansion was apparent, however, there was no room at the current location. Also, bringing the hospital up to code would cost several hundred thousand dollars so plans were made to build a completely new facility at a new location. [1]
After the hospital joined Adventist Health on September 1, 1979, property was purchased for a new hospital and construction began on September 20, 1979. Patients and equipment were transferred to the new facility in March 1980. It was at this time that the hospital adopted Ukiah Adventist Hospital as its name.[1]
In August 1988, the properties of Ukiah General Hospital were purchased and consolidated into the operations of Ukiah Adventist Hospital, making it a 94-bed facility on two campuses. One year later, the name was changed to Ukiah Valley Medical Center/Adventist Health (UVMC).[1]
A 16,000-square-foot (1,500 m2) addition opened in April 1998 that included a new maternity ward, pharmacy and health education facility. The purchase of adjacent property allowed UVMC to remodel existing buildings into a mammography, outpatient physical therapy services and add additional parking. This project was completed in September 1998.[1]
