The UP Makalu is a German single-place paraglider that was designed and produced by UP Europe of Kochel am See. Introduced in 2001, production of the final version ended in 2016.[1]
Design and development
The Makalu was designed as a basic intermediate glider and named for the mountain of the same name.[1]
The design progressed through several generations of models, the Makalu, Makalu 2 and Makalu 3. The models are each named for their relative size.[1][2][3][4][5]
The original generation Makalu's sail was made from Porsher Marine New Skytex and its lines were fabricated from Cousin Trestec Super Aramid.[3]

- Makalu XS
- Extra small-sized model for lighter pilots. Its 10.9 m (35.8 ft) span wing has a wing area of 23.7 m2 (255 sq ft), 42 cells and the aspect ratio is 5.0:1. The take-off weight range is 55 to 75 kg (121 to 165 lb). The glider model is Deutscher Hängegleiterverband e.V. (DHV) 1-2 certified.[3]
- Makalu S
- Small-sized model for lighter pilots. Its 11.4 m (37.4 ft) span wing has a wing area of 26.0 m2 (280 sq ft), 42 cells and the aspect ratio is 5.0:1. The take-off weight range is 65 to 85 kg (143 to 187 lb). The glider model is DHV 1-2 certified.[1][3]
- Makalu M
- Mid-sized model for medium-weight pilots. Its 11.9 m (39.0 ft) span wing has a wing area of 28.5 m2 (307 sq ft), 42 cells and the aspect ratio is 5.0:1. The take-off weight range is 80 to 105 kg (176 to 231 lb). The glider model is DHV 1-2 certified.[1][3]
- Makalu L
- Large-sized model for heavier pilots. Its 12.4 m (40.7 ft) span wing has a wing area of 31.0 m2 (334 sq ft), 42 cells and the aspect ratio is 5.0:1. The take-off weight range is 95 to 120 kg (209 to 265 lb). The glider model is DHV 1-2 certified.[1][3]
- Makalu XL
- Extra large-sized model for heavier pilots and two-place tandem use. Its 12.9 m (42.3 ft) span wing has a wing area of 33.5 m2 (361 sq ft), 42 cells and the aspect ratio is 5.0:1. The take-off weight range is 110 to 150 kg (243 to 331 lb). The glider model is DHV 1-2 certified.[3]
