The Type 1 Heavy Machine Gun (一式重機関銃 Iti-shiki juu-kikanjuu) was a heavy machine gun used by the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War starting from 1941. It was sometimes used as a light anti-aircraft gun during the war in the Pacific. It is essentially a smaller, lighter version of the Type 92 Heavy Machine Gun. It employs the same principles of operation, simply with scaled down components. The barrel is designed to be rapidly changed in the field, as a result the barrel cooling rings have been reduced in size.
