Tvillingderbyt (Swedish: [²tvɪlːɪŋˌdærbʏt], The Twin Derby) is a football fixture in Stockholm, Sweden, between city rivals AIK and Djurgårdens IF. Both clubs were founded in Stockholm in 1891, separated by just three weeks, but neither of them started to play football until 5 years later in 1896.

History

Tvillingderbyt in the 1950–51 Allsvenskan season.
Tvillingderbyt in the 2014 Allsvenskan season.

AIK Fotboll started playing football in 1896, while Djurgårdens IF Fotboll started in 1899.[1] The first football match between them was played on 16 July 1899 on Svea Lifgardes IP and resulted in a 2–1 AIK win.[1]

Rivalry culture

Generally considered to be the strongest city rivalry in Sweden, a true archrivalry. They are historically Stockholm's biggest and most successful clubs with both having won a total of 11 Swedish Championships each and 8 respectively 4 Swedish Cups. The two clubs were founded in 1891, separated by just three weeks. Therefore, the derby is known as the Tvillingderbyt (the Twinderby). Matches between the two clubs are sometimes listed in the European top ten of hottest derbies. Since 1891, 230 fixtures have been contested in all competitions with 86 AIK wins and 82 Djurgården wins. Both clubs have gained a large amount of support throughout Stockholm. Though there is a certain geographical divide as well with AIK's heartland being in the Northwestern part and Djurgården's heartland being in the Eastern part of the city. Both clubs also share rivalries with Hammarby IF located in the south of the city.

This rivalry is also found in ice hockey which further aggravates tension between both sets of fans and shapes the rivalry as quite unique in Swedish sport. They are the only two clubs in Sweden who have won more than one championship in both football and ice hockey (AIK have won 11 in Football and 7 in Hockey; Djurgården have won 11 in Football and 16 in Hockey).
