Tollerton is a village situated in Rushcliffe just to the south of Nottingham, England.

The village is located in the Borough of Rushcliffe. The Parish Council of nine members runs local affairs and the population of the parish in 2001 is registered as 1,776 residents adding Clipston and increasing to 1,883 at the 2011 Census.[2]

History

St Hugh's College, based at Tollerton Hall, was founded in 1948 by the Diocese of Nottingham to be their junior seminary, accepting boys from 11 years and up, but by 1969 it had opened its doors to secular students. It closed in 1986, and the Hall is now a corporate HQ.[3]

Culture

There is an annual village event which held in June. This event gathers residents around craft stalls, entertainments, refreshments and small exhibitions. Money generated helps local charities.

There is a pub called the Air Hostess, named after Tollerton's airport, Nottingham Airport. This pub is unusual in having a piste for playing pétanque. It used to have a large carved sign depicting an air hostess however in 2011, the owners of the premises (Everards brewery) decided to refurbish the pub and in doing so removed the original sign. The pub now has a conventional hanging sign depicting a painting of an air hostess.

Tollerton has two churches. St Peter's Church (CofE) was originally established at the end of the 12th century. Further developments in 1909 resulted in the church as it is today. A Methodist church is located in a modern building in the village centre.

There are a small number of local shops including a post office, a petrol station, a hairdressers, a small eatery as well as a restaurant serving oriental-style food, The Charde. Miah's Indian restaurant is situated at the airport. The Parish Rooms are located at the end of the parade of shops on Burnside Grove and serve as a centre for local community activities and meetings.

Education

Education is served by a local primary/junior school and next door is a playgroup for younger children. The nearest secondary is South Wolds Academy and Sixth Form (specialist language school) located in the nearby village of Keyworth. Local amenities include a park with an astroturf 5-a-side football pitch and a full-sized grass main football pitch. The park was refurbished with new children's play equipment in April 2008.

Economy

The village has continued agricultural employment. There are also local businesses in insurance, IT / Telephony recording sectors. Also located just outside the village at Nottingham Airport are a car body shop, computer furniture maker and a recovery company used by Nottinghamshire Police.
