Accreditations & Affiliations
TMI and its courses are approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), which is responsible for maritime administration and for overseeing maritime education and training in India.[2]
TMI is a member of the Association of Maritime Education and Training Institutions in Asia-Pacific (AMETIAP). The goal of AMETIAP, which has over 85 members, consisting of maritime training institutions throughout the Asia-Pacific region, is to foster cross-border co-operation and to improve the quality of maritime training and education.
TMI degree programmes are also approved by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. TMI graduates may, if they so desire, appear for Deck Officer Certificate of Competency / MEO Class 5 Certificate of Competency, after completing a two week course at Singapore.[3]
TMI has been assigned as ‘Grade 1’ for its degree courses by Crisil. This is the highest grading obtainable and indicates that the quality of education imparted by the graded courses at TMI with respect to the course objectives as stated by DGS is outstanding.
Placements and Internships
The innovative Internship component of a TMI degree programme, apart from serving as a training element, is a key factor for the effective placement of graduates. This initiative provides the opportunity for an in-depth evaluation of a student by a potential employer and a jump start to employer specific training. TMI's experience has been that almost all students are absorbed by the same companies that provided them with their internship opportunity.
A small number of marine engineering students preparing for careers as shipboard engineers intern with shore based organisations that have engineering facilities similar to onboard systems or that produce major engine room equipment for ships. While these same organisations have shown tremendous interest in recruiting their TMI interns after graduation, ship managers and ship owners greatly value the in depth knowledge gained by these interns and have recruited them for shipboard positions.
Various Companies to Offer Internship-
The success and efficacy of the Internship and Final Placements Programmes is in no small measure because TMI students are particularly well prepared to be effective workers during the internship period and that the learning process during internship is guided by a structured programme.[4]
