The Rose Tint is the second solo studio album by New Zealand rapper David Dallas. It was nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Urban/Hip Hop Album at the 2011 VNZMA.[1] This was considered an impressive feat for an album released as a free download. It was also shortlisted for the 2012 Taite Music Prize.[2]
Release
The album was released free on the internet on 11 May 2011.[3] Dallas said he wanted to give his album away for free because "That's ultimately what you need, you want people to hear it. You think, would you rather a thousand people heard it or would you rather sell it to one hundred?"[4]
The album was downloaded more than 8,000 times within its first 24 hours. Overall it has been downloaded 50,000+ times.[5]

The Rose Tint: Deluxe Edition
After The Rose Tint had attracted 50,000+ downloads, Dallas decided it was time the album was made into a physical album. He released this statement through his website explaining the reason behind a physical edition:
"for EVERYONE who’s been asking what The Rose Tint Deluxe edition is:
It’s a gift from me to all the people who’ve supported this project. At 50,000+ downloads it just felt like it was time we made something for everyone who asked for a physical product they could actually hold." [7]
Bonus Tracks & Instrumental Disc
The deluxe edition contains 4 bonus tracks, "Feel Like Oasis", which features Kid Daytonna & Tayyib Ali, "Not Enough", which features Jordache, "10 Foot Tall" and "Couldn't Walk A Mile". Also the deluxe edition replaces the track "Til Tomorrow" with a remix by M-Phazes.[8]
The deluxe edition includes an instrumental disc of all the original tracks of The Rose Tint except "Til Tomorrow", with Dallas saying that the instrumental disc "is for the aspiring artists or anyone who just loved the beats." [9]
The Rose Tint Deluxe Release
The Rose Tint: Deluxe Edition was released on 8 November 2011 in North America and 14 November in New Zealand and Australia. The album debuted on the RIANZ chart at #3, making it the highest charting Hip-hop album of the year.[10]
Use of other artists's work
Track #3, "Take A Picture" employs a remixed version of The Chemical Brothers' "Saturate" as a basis for the rap.
- Dallas: " it's not a sample, it's all replayed so it's an interpolation. Chem Brothers actually heard the song on their own and reached out to us tho, so it's all cleared with them and their publishers."
