Te Wharehuia Milroy

Wharehuia Milroy QSO (born 1937, Whakatane) is a Professor of Māori language. He is a descendant of Ngāi Tūhoe and Ngati Koura tribes. Together with Professor Tīmoti S. Kāretu and Professor Pou Temara, he is a Lecturer of the Panekiretanga ō te Reo (Institute of Excellence in the Maori Language).[1] He is a recipient of the Maori Creative New Zealand Te Waka Toi award.[2]

History

Te Wharehuia is a descendant of Tuhoe chief, Takurua Tamarau. During the early 1990s, Wharehuia became a listed member of the Waitangi Tribunal Association. In the past, Wharehuia has worked and lectured at the University of Waikato in the Māori Department, along with Professor Samuel Kāretu.

In 2010 Wharehuia lost his wife, Marion Rongomaianiwaniwa Milroy (née Fabling). She was descendant of the Te Arawa tribe and also a female speaker for the Te Panekiretanga Maori Language Institute.
