The Taipei Representative Office in France; (Chinese: 駐法國台北代表處; pinyin: Zhù Fàguó Táiběi Dàibiǎo Chù) (French: Bureau de Représentation de Taipei en France) represents the interests of Taiwan in France in the absence of formal diplomatic relations, functioning as a de facto embassy. Its counterpart in Taiwan is the French Office in Taipei.[3]
History
It was established in 1974 as the Association pour la Promotion des Echanges Commerciaux et Touristiques avec Taiwan (ASPECT), before adopting its present name in 1995.[1]
The Office is headed by a Director, currently Michel Lu Ching-long.[4] A fluent French speaker, he was appointed to the post in 2006, having earlier served as Ambassador to Haiti from 2000 to 2002, before being appointed Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taipei.[5]
It also has responsibility for Andorra and Monaco in Europe, as well as for Gabon, Republic of Congo, Mauritania, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco in Africa.[6]
