Syro-African Depression

The Syro-African Depression, currently known as the Jordan Rift Valley, is located in the northeastern section of the Great Rift Valley, in Western Asia.

The "Syro-African Depression," also known as the "Syro-African Rift Valley," are outdated terms, though still used by some to identify the Jordan Rift Valley.

Geography

The rift valley is a large area of low-lying land in the western Middle East, located in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine region, Syria, and the West Bank of the Palestinian territories.

It comprises all of the land forming the drainage basin of the Dead Sea.

Name origin

The Syro part of the name comes from it being found in the area sometimes described as the region of Syria, while the African part of the name refers to the fact that the depression is geologically the northernmost part of the African Rift Valley system, despite the fact that it is not in Africa.
