Syed Badrudduja (4 January 1900 – 18 November 1974) was an Indian Bengali Muslim politician who was a member of West Bengal State assembly, Indian parliament and the Mayor of Kolkata.[2][3]
Early life
He was son of Syed Abdul Ghafur; born at Village Talibpur, Murshidabad district on 4 January 1900.[1] He did early education from Salar H.E. School and Kagram H.E. School Murshidabad and later studied at Calcutta Madrassa and graduated in law from Presidency College, Calcutta and the University of Calcutta.[1]
He was married to Begum Rakeea Khatoon and had 4 sons and 6 daughters.[1]
He worked as a Lawyer at Calcutta.[1]
Badrudduja was active in the Khilafat Movement. He was also involved in the civil disobedience movements of India. He was a prominent advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity.[2]
Career
He joined the Bengal Muslim League and served as Secretary of Progressive Muslim League. He worked in the Indian independence movement with noted Bengali leaders like Chitta Ranjan Das, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy. He was also associated with Krishak Praja Party.[1] Later, he became president of Independent Democratic Party.[1] He also served as Secretary of the Progressive Assembly Party, Bengal, and as President of the Progressive Coalition Party, Bengal.[1] He was the Mayor of Kolkata from 1943 to 1944. He decided to stay in India after the Partition.[2][4][5] He was a member of Bengal Legislative Assembly, 1940—46, Bengal Legislative Council, 1946-47, West Bengal Legislative Assembly, 1948—52 and 1957—62; Member, Third Lok Sabha, 1962—67 and 4th Lok Sabha- 1967-70[1]
Apart from this he was active in public life and served as President of Calutta Muslim Students' Association, Anjuman-i-Taraqqi Urdu, West Bengal, West Bengal Relief and Rehabilitation Samity, Calcutta Muslim Institute and Vice-President of All Bengal Muslim Youngmen Association[1]
Death
He died on 18 November 1974.[6]
