Stephen Brobst is the chief technology officer of Teradata.

Education

Stephen Brobst has an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and computer science from University of California, Berkeley. As a college senior, he received the Bechtel Engineering Award.[1] He also has an MBA through a joint program between Harvard Business School and MIT Sloan School of Management. Brobst has a Master’s degree and doctorate degree in computer science from MIT. His research there focused on high-performance parallel processing.[2]

Career

Brobst helped launch the start-up companies Tanning Technology Corporation, NexTek Solutions, and Strategic Technologies and Systems. He joined Teradata when it was a division of NCR Corporation in 1999, when it acquired Strategic Technologies and Systems.[1] The San Diego Union Tribune labeled him one of their “People to Watch” in 2005.[3]

Brobst has been interviewed in Computer Weekly,[4] BBC News,[5] and Forbes magazine about the challenges of big data and unstructured data in the software industry.[6]

Memberships

Brobst is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, the New York Academy of Sciences, the UC Berkeley Alumni Scholars Association, and the California Scholarship Federation. He was an advisor to the National Academy of Sciences in the area of IT development, and from 2008 through 2012, a member of Barack Obama’s Innovation and Technology Advisory Committee working group for the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.[1]

Teaching

Brobst taught graduate courses at MIT and Boston University. He has been on the faculty of the Data Warehousing Institute since 1996, and has been a guest lecturer at MIT and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management.[1]

Publications

Brobst is the co-author of the book, Building a Data Warehouse for Decision Support, published by Prentice Hall PTR in 1997.[7] He published articles in Intelligent Enterprise, Communications of the ACM, and other publications.[8]
