Stephanie Sarley (born June 21, 1988[lower-alpha 1]) is a contemporary American artist. She is best known for her "fruit fingering" video series which appeared on Instagram beginning in late 2015. Her work has been featured by numerous media outlets globally and has been praised as "genius".[1] In addition to her videography, she is an illustrator and painter, creating series of flower-themed and talking vaginas known as "Orcunts" and "Crotch Monsters" respectively.[2] She is also the author of the adult coloring book Dick Dog and Friends, published in 2013 and distributed by Last Gasp.[3]
Early life
Sarley was born in Berkeley, California and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she studied and apprenticed in classical arts, eventually studying print-making at Laney College in Oakland.[4][5]
Artwork
Sarley's art can be divided into three categories: Crotch Monsters: anthropomorphized vaginas, modern interpretations of Vagina loquens and Vagina dentata; Orcunts:[6] florid vagina drawings that have drawn comparison to Georgia O'Keeffe; and fruit videos, which have garnered media attention[7] and been noted by art critic Jerry Saltz, who said: "You. Are. Genius."[1][2]
Sarley has been referred to as the "patron saint of vagina drawings."[2] Her artwork deals with issues surrounding sexism, censorship, and women's empowerment.[1][2][6][8] Critics have compared her work to Gustav Courbet, Egon Schiele,[2] Betty Tompkins, and Joan Semmel.[9]
A large quantity of Sarley's work is published digitally. Her primary platform for releasing material to the public is her Instagram account,[10] although the bulk of her work can be found on her website.[11]
Publications
In 2013, Sarley published the adult coloring book Dick Dog And Friends which is currently in distribution via Last Gasp.[3]
Several prominent publications have featured Sarley's art including Hatezine,[12] Strangeways Magazine, and New Cartographer Magazine.[11] Sarely's art has also appeared in the "munchies" section of Vice Magazine.[13]
Reception
Instagram has removed Sarley's account multiple times for violating its terms of service regarding sexually suggestive content.[1] Her account has been restored by Instagram after each removal.
Sarley's fruit art has garnered international attention from various news and magazine sources.[14][15][16][17][18] Sarley's work has been subject to numerous copyright violations and appropriations.[1][8]
