Stater Bros. Markets is a privately held supermarket discount chain, based in San Bernardino, California, consisting of 168 stores located throughout Southern California. Founded in Yucaipa, California on August 17, 1936 by Cleo and Leo Stater (with help from younger brother Lavoy), it consisted of 166 stores as of October, 2016. It entered the Fortune 500 for the first time in 2006 at #493,[2] the first notable Inland Empire-based company to do so. On September 10, 2006, the headquarters began construction of a 2,000,000-square-foot (190,000 m2) facility at San Bernardino International Airport (formerly Norton Air Force Base) from its former location on the Colton–Grand Terrace border.[3]
Stores
Stores are mainly in communities east of the San Gabriel River in Los Angeles and Orange counties. A few are also located in northern inland areas of San Diego County and parts of northern Los Angeles County, such as Palmdale. Also there are two stores in Kern County in the cities of Ridgecrest and Mojave.[4] However, throughout its Inland Empire base, they are concentrated heavily in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Major competitor supermarket chains in Stater's territory are Albertsons-Vons, Ralphs-Food4Less (a division of Kroger)
Management
Jim Lee, president and COO of Stater Bros. Markets, retired May 31, 2003.[5] He made the announcement after being inducted into the California Grocers Association Educational Foundation (CGAEF) Hall of Achievement.[6]
As of January 2016, the company is run by president and Chief Executive Officer Pete Van Helden. Jack H. Brown became Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors.[7]
Stater Bros. Markets executive chairman Jack H. Brown Jr. died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, at age 78.
Slogans
For many years, Stater Bros. Markets did not have an official corporate slogan (the unofficial phrase was "It's our meat that made us famous"), but that changed in the early 1990s when "The Eco-Friendly Leader in the Heartland" was introduced as the new official slogan (later changed to the current "The Low-Priced Leader in Your Hometown", now supplanted by an "unofficial" slogan: "An American Tradition To Serve Your Family Well"). As of 2006, the slogan has been replaced with a lengthy phrase with an emphasis on rhymed words. Found on almost every single plastic bag and VHS tape: "Lowering Prices Everyday to Help You Save on What You Pay!" was the most recent slogan (until January 2012); currently, the slogan is "Where you Always Get More...For Less".
Route 1992 Rendezvous
Since 1990, Stater Bros. Markets has hosted their annual Stater Bros. Route 1992 Rendezvous classic car cruise; however, due to the bankruptcy of the City of San Bernardino in 2003, the event was cancelled until further notice.
In September 2003, San Bernardino hosted an alternative show, “Rendezvous Back to Route 66".
