The Springfield Stallions were an indoor football team that played their home games in Springfield Illinois. They were a 2007 expansion member of the Continental Indoor Football League.
The Stallions played their home football games at the Prairie Capital Convention Center which is located in downtown Springfield. It has a seating capacity of 6,500 for football games.
On October 17, the team announced they were going to play in the Continental Indoor Football League.[1]
This was the inaugural season for the Stallions at the professional level. There had previously been a semi-pro team in Springfield called the Stallions in 2006 which played for the 8FL. While the current Stallions ownership maintained the rights to the original franchise (and maintained a few players from the semi-pro team) the current Stallions' history was not considered a continuation of the original team's. The new team recruited players from across the country including D1AA college and professional football players like Winston Taylor (U of Illinois and Miami Dolphins) and Freddie Weinke (Iowa State U and Chicago Bears) and a myriad of semi-pro castoffs.
The Head Coach hired to guide the Stallions was Kevin Gade who attended McMurray College and was a record holding standout in college. Defensive Coordinator was Bryan Taylor a local Chiropractor and James Rychel a local realtor.
The Stallions weathered myriad problems with ownership stealing money from sponsors, failing to pay players and coaches, and eventually leaving town in the middle of the night leaving the team to sink while coaches tried to generate money to keep the players paid through the season. Eventually the league stepped in and shut the team down due to the financial problems.
