Transmitted by mosquitoes, it is responsible for Spondweni fever, which is characterized by a fever, chills, nausea, headaches, malaise and nosebleeds.[1] SPOV is found in sub-Saharan Africa and Papua New Guinea.
It is phylogenetically very close to the Zika virus,[2] with which it forms a clade within the genus Flavivirus.
