History

Sherwood Secondary School was founded in 1967 as part of the Board of Education for the City of Hamilton's plan to accommodate children of baby boomers. The school is named after the Sherwood Forest Survey area of the Hamilton Mountain.

Curriculum focus

Sherwood Secondary School has a variety of educational programs and has developed educational programs specific to the needs of our students. Sherwood offers locally developed courses through College and University preparation programs. Sherwood also offers Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs for students to learn in real world co-operative learning environments.

The Sherwood School Community is involved in researching and changing literacy practices and have increased their literacy scores from 2005 to 2009.

Asbestos in Sherwood

Sherwood Secondary was built in 1967 at a time when Asbestos was commonly used. The school has asbestos in nearly every wing and floor, and an article released on November 13, 2015 stated that Sherwood is "filled" with asbestos. Days later, Principal Bob Pratt announced via the school P.A. "to remove an eighth of the asbestos from the building would require pupils to be removed from the building for at least 6 months." and "The school board will honot the promise to keep a school on the Sherwood site." It has been thought that students may be moved to former high school Hill Park Secondary, which closed in 2014. While this has not been confirmed, it has not been denied. The plan to remove the asbestos and the future of Sherwood Secondary remains unclear.
