Shannon Boyd (born 9 September 1992) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who currently plays for the Canberra Raiders in the National Rugby League. A New South Wales Country and Australia national rugby league team representative, he plays at prop.
Playing career
Born in Goulburn, New South Wales, Boyd played his junior football for the Cowra Magpies before being signed by the Canberra Raiders. Boyd played for the Raiders' NYC team from 2010 to 2012.[2] Boyd has played for the New South Wales Under 18s team and, in 2012, the New South Wales Under 20s team.[3]
2014
In Round 1 of the 2014 NRL season, Boyd made his NRL debut for the Canberra Raiders off the interchange bench against the North Queensland Cowboys in the Raiders 28-22 loss at 1300SMILES Stadium.[4] In Round 6 against the Newcastle Knights, Boyd scored his first NRL career try in the Raiders 26-12 loss at Canberra Stadium.[5] On 23 April 2014, Boyd re-signed with the Raiders for a further three years, keeping him at the club till the end of the 2017 season.[6] Boyd finished off the 2014 season with playing 21 matches and scoring a try in his debut year in the NRL for the Raiders. On 10 September 2014, Boyd was named the Raiders 2014 Rookie of the Year at the Meninga Medal presentation night.[7]
2015
In May 2015, Boyd was selected as 18th man for New South Wales Country.[8] In Round 22 against the Wests Tigers, he scored his first career double in the first half of the match in the Raiders' 20-18 loss at Canberra Stadium.[9] He finished the 2015 season having played in 20 matches and scoring 5 tries.[10] On 8 September 2015, he was named the 2015 Prime Minister's XIII train-on squad but was later ruled out due to injury.[11][12] On 27 October 2015, he re-signed with the Raiders on a 3-year contract.[13]
2016
On 30 January, Boyd was named in the Raiders' 2016 NRL Auckland Nines squad.[14] On 8 May, Boyd played for New South Wales Country against New South Wales City, where he started at prop in the 44-30 loss in Tamworth.[15] During the season, Boyd was being recognised as being the one of the inform props of the competition, showing some great performances up front to lead the Raiders to a 10-match winning streak towards the finals where they came into second-place on the ladder.[16][17] Boyd enjoyed a solid 2016 NRL season with him playing in 26 matches and scoring 2 tries form the Raiders. On 3 October 2016, Boyd was rewarded for his big season by being selected in the 24-man Australian Kangaroos squad for the 2016 Four Nations.[18] On 15 October 2016, Boyd made his international debut for Australia against New Zealand, where he started at prop in the 26-6 win at nib Stadium in Perth.[19][20] Boyd played in 4 matches of the tournament including playing off the interchange bench in the Kangaroos 34-8 Four Nations Final win against New Zealand at Anfield.[21][22]
