Shanin Specter is an American lawyer. He is a founding partner of Kline & Specter, a Philadelphia law firm.[2]
Early life, education, and career
Specter was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Specter earned an undergraduate degree in political science from Haverford College. While there, he acted as an assistant to Congressman Bob Edgar with his work on the House Select Committee on Assassinations, during their review of the JFK and Martin Luther King assassination investigations. He then graduated with a JD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law and an LLM from the University of Cambridge. During law school, he trained under litigator Jim Beasley. After law school, he began working for Beasley full time in 1984.[3]
Career
In 1995 Specter cofounded the law firm Kline & Specter with Thomas R. Kline, which is now the largest personal injury law firm in Pennsylvania.[4] In his legal career, he has "obtained more than 200 verdicts and settlements exceeding $1 million, including 16 that exceeded $10 million," according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.[5] He is also a newspaper contributor, writing for publications including CNN.[6][7] In 2013, Specter was interviewed by several publications about the role his father’s investigation of the assassination of JFK had affected his life.[8][9]
Specter has secured multi-million dollar verdicts in lawsuits against several large corporations, including the Ford Motor Co. in a case involving the death of a boy due to a defective parking brake,[10] West Penn Power Co. after a woman was electrocuted by a falling power line,[11] and U.S. Security Associates, Inc., in an action involving the shooting deaths of two employees at a Kraft Foods factory in Philadelphia.[12]
Political life
He is the son of the late Senator Arlen Specter, for whom Shanin Specter worked as a campaign consultant on his father’s electoral campaigns[13][14] since his time as a student.[15] In 2002, he also accompanied Michael Smerconish on an official trip to Cuba where they met with Fidel Castro.[16] In 2014, Shanin Specter was named to Pennsylvania Governor-elect Tom Wolf’s steering committee.[17] He has also provided testimony before the Philadelphia City Council on the subject of public safety.[18]
Personal life
Shanin Specter is the son of Arlen Specter and Joan Levy, who served as a city councilman for the city of Philadelphia.[19] Specter married his wife, Tracey Specter, in 1986.[20]
