San Alfonso del Mar
San Alfonso del Mar is a private resort in Algarrobo, Chile, about 100 km (62 mi) west of Santiago.[1] The resort has the world's second largest swimming pool. The new record holder is the 30 acres CityStars pool in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, built by same company that built San Alfonso del Mar.[2]
The pool is 1,013 m (3,323 ft) long,[3] covering 8 ha (20 acres),[3] containing some 250 million litres (66 million US gallons)[4] of seawater, with a maximum depth of 11.5 ft (3.5 m).[5] The water is pumped from the Pacific Ocean, filtered, and treated.
Development
The pool was developed by Fernando Fischmann; his Chilean company Crystal Lagoons built the pool, which opened in December 2006. While early estimates put the total cost of construction at about US$3.5 million for the filtration system alone,[6][7] more recent estimates are in the area of US$1.5 billion to US$2 billion total for construction and almost US$4 million in annual maintenance.[4][8][9]
